Fined for slapping woman’s buttocks

HONG KONG: American sailor was fined for slapping a woman on the bottom a day after he arrived in Hong Kong aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, it was reported yesterday.

Petty officer Salinas Gilbert, 21, was fined HK$2,000 (RM976) and ordered to pay another HK$1,000 compensation to the woman.

He was found guilty of smacking her buttocks on Nov 23 while she was leaning against railings on the seaside promenade in the tourist area of Tsim Sha Tsui with her boyfriend.

The court heard that Gilbert told the woman's boyfriend after catching him, “I don't care. American law will protect me.”

Magistrate Ernest Lin Kam-hung was quoted by the South China Morning Post as telling Gilbert: “You should be ashamed of yourself behaving in this manner. You have brought shame on the people of your country.”

A spokesman for the US consulate said the US military “will impose punishment on its officers who fail to maintain discipline” while visiting on port calls.

I thought that petty officers were NCOs.

Yep, petty officers E4-6. Chief Petty officers E7-E9.
Officers O1 and up, better knowen as 0's (zero's).
