[history]
Much has been made in the media about the sweep of California statewide offices by Democrats, the first time that had happened in 120-odd years.
It's certainly noteworthy, at least as a historic milestone, and it does underscore the decline of the Republicans in a state whose major statewide elections they once dominated. It stands in contrast, too, to the wins by White House-led Republicans in congressional, senatorial and statehouse contests in the rest of the nation.

Is this the silver lining to the storm cloud of rampant socialism?

This seems like grasping for straws. I fear that California remains a One Party Dictatorship.

The budget is about the only area where Republicans will matter, although, as the article notes, their larger numbers will make it more difficult for Democrats to let their members in conservative districts slide on tough votes. That, combined with the upcoming fiscal disaster, might translate into more Republican legislators two years from now. So it's a possible silver lining.

There is hope to remove some of the Manure from Sacramento.
We will do better in 2004!

I'd trade a few executive offices for more legislative seats. And we're in position to pick up even more in the next election despite the Democrats' gerrymandering. The only way we can go from here in the State Legislature is up. The news to Gray Davis and the Rats is conservatives in California are far from finished. The news of our demise has been exaggerated.

Republicans seem to be in better shape in CA than the Rats are in Florida or Texas.

That said, the fact that Democrats gained the one minor statewide office they hadn't previously held -- secretary of stateI would like to quote newly elected SoS Kevin Shelley from the voters guide (italics are his).
"This year, I worked to expand the program to protect women who were being harassed for seeking family planning services, including abortion. Did you know that extremists proposed a law that would have denied any woman who had an abortion the right to vote?"
Personified pure evil. It's a pity about Olberg. He was the only candidate who mentioned the abomination of reporting election forecasts before the polls close in his candidate's statement.
