New Republic Editor: GOP Is 'The Anti-Black Party'

New Republic Editor Peter Beinart couldn't resist smearing 99-year-old retiring Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-SC, on Sunday, contending that his most memorable political accomplishment was to turn the Republican party into "the anti-black party."

Appearing as part of CNN's "Late Edition" round table, Beinart was asked by host Jonathan Karl what he thought Sen. Thurmond's legacy would be.

"Let's call a spade a spade here," Beinart snarled.

"His legacy is white supremacism. His legacy is the rise of the Republican Party in the South based on the backlash against civil rights on the Republican Party becoming the anti-black party."

Not content to leave bad enough alone, the liberal writer added, "And if Republicans really want to move away from that legacy, they should join me in saying good riddance (to Thurmond)."

Moderator Karl wasted no time voicing his apparent agreement, telling Beinart, "Well, don't wait for that to happen."

Question for Beinart and Karl:

Which current U.S. Senator claims to have put his Ku Klux Klan hood aside in the 1930's, wrote that African-American's were "race mongrels" in the 1940's and used the racial epithet "n----rs" twice during a nationally televised interview just last year?

Hint: He isn't a Republican.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

An interesting choice of words.

Thanks for the ping! The left never ceases to amaze me -- you would think with the ex-Klan (we assume ex) Robert Byrd, a Democrat, they would not bring something like this up!

I think that Strom was a very smart politician. He could see the hand writing on the wall. I also think he, like Helms, changed over the years.

People do change. This is a fact that a lot of people don't like to admit.

The recent election results has transformed a normally imbalanced bunch of POS's into desperate people. The name-calling will only get worse.

In the past, it was really tough to call them on it and the sheeple had no clue; with the internet and talk radio the playing field is more even and THEY CAN'T STAND IT. Ef 'em all.

Let's start a pool and try to guess when Tom Daschle will denounce this editor's comments as "shrill" and likely to generate threats against Strom and his family.

I agree with you.

Funny how, after we just smacked them around in the last election, they insist that we take their advice.

A republican saying that would have been run out of town on a rail.

I agree. I'll even go so far as to suggest that former Klansman Sen. Byrd (and maybe his little dog Billah have too). When it comes to a mean-spirited contest the Rats win every time. What amazes me is that they get away with it because the mainstream media share the same streak of mean-spiritedness. Time to call them all on it -- in a "nice way" of course.

The leftist media has been our best friend in the past two years since the election.

President Bush has proven himself to be a man of honor and the media has proven itself to be totally without a shred of honor.

Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday is next week, on December 5.

Yep.

I wonder if Beinart will point out Byrd's KKK background when the old fart is carried out of the Senate feet first.

It's completely obvious that the vast majority of blacks are hugely better off for having voted 90%+ for Democrats for the last 40 years. < /sarcasm>

Isn't one of the definitions of insanity, continuing to do the same thing again and again, and expecting different results?

There are some signs this is changing, but it's a very small sign.

I can relate. Leftists read this site! There are only 4 homes in my cul-de-sac (very secluded) and it wasn't long ago unknown cars began chasing my dog. I've since received unsigned type written letters in the mailbox demanding I cease all right-wing conspiracy activity. I watch my review now consistently and both lines are traced on every call. We're waiting for new filters to be installed in our ventallation system and no longer order delivery.

No who was it that wouldn't help their Black American Candidates. I do believe I heard Rush say a few words about this.

I have read Strom Thurmond was the oldest Army paratrooper to land in Normandy on D-Day. Robert Byrd was 26 years old on D-Day. The Almanac of American Politics does not list any military record for him.
