The Capitol was stunned when the Legislature's budget office this month forecast a staggering $21 billion deficit over the next 19 months.

Gov. Gray Davis upped the ante, at least rhetorically, on Thursday when he declared, after talking with legislative leaders: "We believe the $21 billion shortfall is on the low side. They can assume the $21 billion number will go up."

That Davis even talked with Republicans about the situation is, unto itself, an indication that the balance of power is shifting in the Capitol.

Note that this article admits that Republican state legislators are getting more conservative, that several RINOs are leaving, and that local Republican candidates did pretty well in the race despite the Dem sweep at the top of the ticket.

I still say that Rove called the shots disastrously wrong in California. He tried to impose a pro-abort candidate and a pro-abort party leader on the state, and when his hand-picked candidate, Riordan, lost the primary, he still left a Country-Club pro-abort in charge of the state party, a man who refused to back Simon and constantly badmouthed him in the press.

The result was that Simon's campaign never received any of the funds that were promised from rich donors within the state. Simon needed to get his message out, and was unable to buy enough ads to get around the media blackout.

"During the campaign, the budget Davis signed in September was ridiculed by Republican challenger Bill Simon, who suggested that the state could face another $20 billion shortfall," says the SacBee. But we all know that the SacBee and its media accomplices let this message reach the voters during the campaign. They helped Davis with his massive coverup, and now they refuse to admit their own complicity.

Maybe it is better that Simon lost and Davis must suffer the pain of dealing with a crisis he caused. But unless Karl Rove learned something from the success of the pro-life movement almost everywhere in the country on November 5, and the stunning defeat of almost all the pro-aborts, California will remain a lost cause. They still have the equivalent of Terry McAuliffe in charge of the California Republican party, imposed by Rove.

Hey, Gov Davis, I've got an idea!

If you HAVE to let illegal aliens attend state universities (stupid idea) how about you charge them OUT OF STATE TUITION?

The 10k/year increase per student will help your education funding.

Of course, a better idea would be to NOT allow ILLEGAL aliens to attend state schools at all. Save a bunch of education money.

Somewhere along the line it was written into the state consitution that over half of the state budget MUST go to education. Changing that would be my first priority.

I can sympathize except for one thing. A $30 BILLION deficit translates to $1000 for each of the 30 million people living in California. That makes my family share $4000 which I have no desire to throw away on leftist speical interest bribes.

George Dukmajian entered office 20 years ago with a similar mess created by Jerry Brown. He balanced the budget in one year thanks to severe budget cuts and trimming. He never got the credit he richly deserved for that turn-around. Simon could have done the same thing.

Your share is $4000 IF you assume that Gray Davis will extract the same amount per resident. Your share certainly won't be less than that.

California simply needs to print it's own currency- payable only to those who hold state jobs, work in the public sector, or contract with the state. This "fifth" largest economy in the world (from Davis campaign) deserves no less.

Example: The current $99 Billion budget fails to include $30 Billion in deficit 'spending'. (would have been $120B budget). Bring on the Cal-buck.

Assuming the state prints the necessary 'cal-bucks' to cover this deficit, a cal-buck currently then, would be valued at about 83 cents (99B/120B). The loss to the recipient of 'cal-bucks' would be about 17 cents on the dollar.

At the gas pump it would look something like this: A typical tank full (say $25) would cost the 'cal-buck' holder $25 plus $4.25 = $29.25

Good money should never be thrown at bad. Likewise, good money shouldn't be used to uphold bad budgets. This form of 'insurance' would be of great concern to legislators at budget time when those who create a mess would be faced with a large voting bloc at election time.

Perfect accountability for a perfect storm.

Mark my word...School funding will not be cut one cent. This is just a Red Herring to toss to the Libs to get them to rally around the school flagpole and save the CTA. A increase in vehicle license fees will cost fleets big big money and watch out for a sales tax on your primary residence. They will no doubt use Prop 13 as a scape goat.
