"Mama Shook: One of Medicine's Ugly Little Secrets."
"I concluded it was my nicotine demon and knew I had to quit for good this time. Even my 5 year-old granddaughters were chastising me. I decided to do whatever it took to be done with cigarettes and my family doctor prescribed a drug that was supposed to help. After a few of the magic pills, my hands, head, body began to shake so badly I couldn't have even held a cigarette, so I just stayed in bed, nursing a bad back and neck, quivering like I was hooked to an electric charge. Everyone was thrilled and ignored the nightmare I was living, because "at least I wasn't smoking". I quit the habit for nearly a year, but my hands, voice, head and heart never stopped shaking. Along with the nicotine habit went eating in public, conversing on the phone, calligraphy and art, sewing, the ability to earn a living with the voice and confidence that had been my mainstay."
Good stuff, AuntB...yer writin' reminds me of one of my faves, Florence King, who just retired from her National Review gig.
