One of the problems is easily seen with the situation that Israel's been in for nearly all of its existance...

Starting in 1956, every war that Israel has fought has NOT been fought to the finish. In fact, the same can be said of every war that the US has fought since WWII. The only way that a war can truely come to an end is by having the loser no longer be cabable of making war, at least not during the lifetimes of the fighters, or more importantly, the leaders.

In every war since their first war, where they really weren't in any shape to continue the fight, external forces (i.e. the UN) has stepped in as soon as it became clear that the aggressors (i.e. the arabs) were losing. Of course, this was due to the proxy nature of the wars, with the USSR supporting the arabs, and the US supporting Israel. For instance, in 1956, Egypt ordered the UN out of its way in order for them to attack, but Israel struck first, winning the war in 6 days. But they didn't press on to destroy the war making capabilities of their enemies, due to outside pressure.

Being civilized countries, Israel, the US and the UK can't and will not (thankfully) do what really should be done regarding terrorists: Kill them wherever they're found. Kill anyone suspected of supporting them. When the dead terrorists are identified, kill their families. Hell, when Israel goes so far as demolishing the homes of the families of the dead terrorists, the rest of the world goes ape! And the threat of sending the families into exile brings on accusations of "war crimes." There really isn't any thing else you can do, when the terrorists know that their families will be provided for after they're gone... Knowing that their families will be homeless and in exile is something of a deterrent, before the fact. I believe that the fore-knowledge of the certain death of their family members would be an even greater deterrant.

In addition to that, track down the money, and kill anyone involved in supplying aid and logistics to the terrorists. It's amazing how quickly the money will dry up for terrorist activities once bankers and executives start dying. And regarding countries and clerics who support that sort of thing, make it clear to them that the "kid gloves" are about to come off. While the President said, "Either you're with us, or you're with the terrorists," it seems to me that the words are just that. Make it clear that if they (the "moderate" muslims) don't "clean house," then we'll have no choice but to lump them all in together. With very few exceptions, the silence has been defening with regard to "moderate" muslims denouncing the evil actions of "the "extremeist" moslems.

On the one hand, suggesting this sort of thing sickens me, and I'm thankful that we (i.e. western civilization) don't do this sort of thing, but I'm afraid that may be the only way to guarantee that terrorism will end.

BTW, is there a system in place in the UK similar to or different from the "terrorism alert system" that was implemented here in the US some months back? And if, so, is it as vague (due to PC "concerns") as what has been established here? -- e.g. "We have secret information pointing to a possible terrorist attack by unmentionable terrorists that we can't tell you anything about. We are currently at Yellow Alert, which means you should be afraid, but we really can't offer you any advice as to what you should do to protect yourself and your family, friends, neighbors, and countrymen. We will soon reach Red Alert, which means you should be VERY afraid, but we still can't offer you any advice.
