Three men have been charged over an alleged plot to release cyanide gas on the London Underground tube network.

The men are north African muslims said to belong to a group linked to al Qaeda.

The alleged plot was foiled after the group was infiltrated by MI5 agents in a six month operation.

The men are thought to be of either Tunisian or Moroccan background and belong to a group called the North African Front, said to have loose connections with Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

One of the men is aged 21, the second 33. The third is in his mid 30s.

They appeared at Bow Street Magistrates' Court earlier this week and were remanded in custody.

Details of the hearing were not released by Scotland Yard at the time and have only just emerged.

The three men will re-appear in court on Monday.

BTW, is there a system in place in the UK similar to or different from the "terrorism alert system" that was implemented here in the US some months back? And if, so, is it as vague (due to PC "concerns") as what has been established here? -- e.g. "We have secret information pointing to a possible terrorist attack by unmentionable terrorists that we can't tell you anything about. We are currently at Yellow Alert, which means you should be afraid, but we really can't offer you any advice as to what you should do to protect yourself and your family, friends, neighbors, and countrymen. We will soon reach Red Alert, which means you should be VERY afraid, but we still can't offer you any advice. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn. The practice among the young men of the neighborhood when noticing "yoots" who did not "belong", was to make them feel distinctly unwelcome. Mostly, the "yoots" got out under their own power.

I belive as long as the British and we Americans continue to stand shoulder to shoulder, no enemy can ever defeat us. True, they may bloody us from time to time. But defeat? Never! One other possibility worth considering would be Henry VIII's basic solution to unruly religions, i.e. simply have the governments of the U.S. and England devise official American and English versions of Islam and declare all other versions of islam illegal in the U.S. and England.

Finally! A sensible solution to this madness! I can't see anything wrong with your suggestion. This actually sounds like it might work.

(Though probably the ACLU would declare it unconstitutional.)
