Mr. Conyers, who did not identify any particular issue, went on to denounce black Republicans. "How can you be a conservative when conservatives have been giving you hell all your life, and then in earlier history, before your life?" he said. "What makes you like this?" Mr. Conyers asked of Republican blacks. "Why do you think that getting some money and a title and job is somehow going to change the fact that you are black from the moment you are born till the time you die?" He said the appointments of Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice mean nothing. "If you think having those two stand in the background of Bush putting two black people, very qualified, very admirable, very smart — so what?"

This SOB wants to play God. They are so in denial about losing support from African-Americans who happen to think a little differently about themselves. He also conveinently forgets which party was in charge and primarily responsible for Jim Crowe activity-why not seek reperations from the Democratic party? I believe many African-Americans are seeing through this veneer and appreciate the fact that a black man stands just a few steps away from the presidency, a black woman is in the highest advisory role ever, and that she may very well become the first black VP. What is everyone else missing?

I read this five times and still can't figure out what he said. Can somebody translate?? I mean, would he rather them have handouts in lieu of opportunity?

I love how he's rewritten history - it was the Dems; the liberals whose boot of oppression rested against blacks throats in the 20th Century and before. And as for this "money, title and job," will someone tell me where it is and how much it is supposed to pay? Last I checked, I earn every dollar I make, and I have to struggle just like most other Americans with taxes, prices, credit, and everything else. That has nothing to do with being black. I was born black, I am black and I will die black. But I am also a proud American conservative.

As thick=headed as Conyers is, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that he can't figure that out.
