Here's some tips ElleBee:

• Get an estimate on how much traffic will visit your site
• Estimate how much disk space you will need
• Consider what environment you will need (Front Page ext, ColdFusion, etc.)
• Look at the support model, help desk availability, administration interface, and data center facility

Once you have a list of requirements, you can see which hosting plans meet your needs. I hear hostway and icestorm are pretty good for webhosting.

I want to draw hits for a commercial venture but I am told that I should find a host who can 'keep submitting the site to search engines" ....... and I'm just at a loss

I would recommend taking a class in you community, maybe thru the local college. I teach at the University; I know there are intro html/web design classes offered for free. Once you get the basics of html down, you can start building a website and host it.

I would advise to pay for your hosting vs. the free stuff as you can find hosting cheaply without the pop up ads.
As far as designing and/or building a web site. That depends on what type of web site you have in mind. A brochure site ? That would require mostly a designer/ graphic artist. If you want to do commerce, host forums, or whatever, I would suggest shop carefully because so much of this stuff has already been built over the last few years, you can find what you need without having to pay someone to build it for you. I will go a step farther and say you can find whatever you need for FREE. You just need someone without enough experience/knowledge to set it all up for you and doing any minor adjustments or custom coding.

Stainlessbanner gave some good advice; however, I can understand why you might not be sure what the answers to the points he brings up are.

I've done business with a company named hostcentric. You can look at their e-commerce prices HERE. Over the last several years, I've been really happy with their dependability.

Unless you expect a huge amount of business, you probably won't need more than 10 Gigabytes of traffic per month. And you probably won't need more than 150 Megabytes of space.

You might wish to consider FrontPage 2002 for designing your web page; it's somewhat easier to learn than Dreamweaver, although (perhaps) a bit less powerful.

There is another possibility you might wish to consider. Amazon.com has some merchant accounts called Z-shops; you can read more about them HERE.

Contact your local newspaper's on line department. They usually can do everything for you from design to hosting at very reasonable rates. If you already advertise, they may have a combo package as well.
