The islamists do not understand the American mind. They do not understand our history. They do not understand how we think at all. They greatly underestimate us. They mistake our compassion for weakness. First, you write splendidly.
Second, you are correct that they don't understand us. But at the same time we don't understand the Arab mind or the Muslim mind. If we did, we would all be signing up to join the armed forces.
