Condoleezza Rice will defeat Hillary Clinton for the 2008 presidency
AnnArborNews ^ | William Safire

Condoleezza Rice will defeat Hillary Clinton for the presidency in 2008, New York Times political columnist William Safire predicted during a stop in Ypsilanti Monday.

Safire was the featured speaker at an annual fund-raiser of the Jewish Federation of Washtenaw County at the Ypsilanti Marriott Hotel.

Asked if he, a political columnist, misses Bill Clinton in the White House, Safire answered: "Desperately."

"He enlivened my life," said Safire, who awaits the day Hillary Clinton stops being a quiet, respectful freshman senator. He then predicted she will run for president in 2008, but will be defeated by Rice, who is now Bush's national security adviser and will by then be governor of California, he said.

Safire, 72, spoke to an audience of 600 people Monday night without benefit of notes, which surprised no one. After all, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist was a speech writer in the Nixon White House, and is the most widely read writer on the English language.

"So it just comes out," Safire said of his writing during a press conference earlier in the day.

During his speech and question-answer period that followed, Safire talked about the upcoming election in Israel, the approaching political scene here, and U.S.-Israeli relations.

Calling himself a good Republican, he said he nonetheless likes a divided government.

"Gridlock is great," he said. "My motto is, 'Don't just do something. Stand there.' "

The fact that so many Jews vote Democratic is "against all common sense," quipped Safire, who is Jewish, as the audience laughed.

The soft-spoken Safire reminded the crowd that there was a time people doubted Japan and Germany could ever become democracies. "It can happen anywhere if people give it a chance," he said, referring to the Middle East.

During the press conference, Safire, whose column appears in the Ann Arbor News, noted that last week's election results can partly be blamed on Democrats who opposed the war, but not too stridently; and opposed Bush's tax cuts, but were fearful of saying so. In addition, too much money was spent trying to beat Gov. Jeb Bush in Florida that could have been spent on other Democrats across the country.

Safire, a conservative Republican at a newspaper written largely by liberals, is a hawk who hopes the result of a war with Iraq will be the spreading of democracy in the Middle East.

He said the election proved people support Bush's foreign policy.

"Conservatism is better for the country than liberalism," he said, "because it's more tuned to individual freedom."

Bill Zirinsky of Ann Arbor is a regular reader of Safire's column and was interested in what he'd have to say Monday night. "Though he's a Nixon Republican, he manages to write an original column with interesting idea two times a week, and he's been doing it for 30 years," said Zirinsky.

"Ann Arbor has the highest per-capita readership of The New York Times outside of New York," said Jeff Levin, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Washtenaw County. "So we knew that Safire would be a recognized and intriguing personality to present to the community."

Safire, who lives in Chevy Chase, Md., and works at his paper's Washington bureau, looks back on an exciting and varied career as a reporter, columnist, correspondent, novelist, TV producer and historian.

But nothing beats what he does right now.

"Writing about politics for The New York Times is the greatest job in the world," he said.

Not a chance ~ JEB/RICE will probably defeat Hillary in 2008 <

What is this? A dynasty of Bushes! I did not want to vote for Bush initially because of that. I hate to see children capitalizing on parent’s money, and fame to get unearned positions ahead of the real experts and the worthy leaders. However, I held my nose and voted for this inarticulate Texan, any body is better then Gore. I do not regret my choice. As a matter of fact, I am pleasantly surprise of his leadership ability.

I don't believe Rice is pro-life. If thats true, she could never win the primary process.

The disturbing thing is the attitude of everyone who thinks the Republicans won't win by 2008 unless we run a black woman. We could be in an all-out shooting war with Islam by then, so it's a little early to assume that the forces of Hillary Clinton-style Political Correctness are going to triumph by default.

Maybe there are other reasons to vote for Condi than the color of her skin or the shape of her genitals. Maybe some of us would vote for her because of her razor-sharp mind and her iron resolve in matters of foreign policy. You never can tell.

HRC will be drafted in 2004. She will run as FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT!

It's a crap shoot. By 2008 she'll be as ugly as Feinstein and Boxer.

HRC is blood-thirsty and she has the rapist as a campaign manager.

The suckermoms will bow down to her and flood the polls.

The stage is being set as we speak.

I don't think the Beast can wait til 2008.
It gets older and uglier by the day, and if W is re-elected and holds the House and Senate his second term threatens to be one of great accomplishment.

The commies can't afford to have so much of their spider web of evil undone, it took forty years to get this far. I take the election of the sinister socialist Nancy Pelosi as a sign.

I'm going out on a limb and predicting IT will run in 04,
or never. It might even suck it up and run as Kerry's VP.
Easy enough to push him in front of a bus once the election's over.

In two years, the economy could still be a big issue, by 08, it will be settled and expanding, barring utter disaster.

Thanks Bill. Coming from you, that means a lot. I think you're pretty cool, too.

I worry that our party will wimp out on Condi the same way NY Dems wimped out on McCall. When those curtains close, how many people will lose courage?

Unless, of course, the alternative is Hillary! I'd vote for a differently abled, transgendered, adult-survivor-of-a-boo-hoo-childhood, Zoroastrian Jupiterian-Earthian before I'd vote for Hillary!

"The disturbing thing is the attitude of everyone who thinks the Republicans won't win by 2008 unless we run a black woman."

I can't speak for others, but my favorable view of Condi has nothing to do with her being either female or black. I couldn't care less about either. I like Dr. Rice because she is brilliant and accomplished, particularly in the international arena since, as you suggest, we may be "in an all-out shooting war with Islam by then."

Rumsfeld is in great shape for his age, so how about a Rumsfeld/Rice ticket in 2008?

We may never elect a 60+-year-old for president again.

I look at Ms. Rice, and I don't see a black woman. I see a qualified, competent person, who, while not an ideal conservative, is still a fine choice for all but the one-issue voters.

Condi won't run. She's great as a policy advisor, but she has no evident political skills. You really ought to get elected to something else before you try running for president.

As to Hillary, no way she's going to wait 6 years and let some lesser democrat drag the party through a humiliating defeat in 2004. Her goal will be to duplicate Bubba's feat. Bush Sr also looked unbeatable half way into his first term. Hillary hasn't forgotten that, and the desire to show-up the hated Bush family once more is not an opportunity she will pass up.

Wasn't National Security advisor Condoleezza Rice the one who failed to "connect the dots" which allowed 9/11 to happen?

Condoleezza Rice will defeat Hillary Clinton for the 2008 presidency

Nah. Rice will never get the 2/3 majority approval necessary in the U.N Security Council to confirm her appointment.

Just a simple procedural note: "William Safire" did not write this piece. The byline on the source says Jo Collins Mathis did.
