Bill Moyers- If You Like God in Gov.-- Then Get Ready for the Rapture

Way back in the 1950's when I first tasted politics and journalism, Republicans briefly controlled the White House and Congress. With the exception of Joseph McCarthy and his vicious ilk, they were a reasonable lot, presided over by that giant war hero, Dwight Eisenhower, who was conservative by temperament and moderate in the use of power.

That brand of Republican is gone. And for the first time in the memory of anyone alive, the entire federal government — the Congress, the Executive, the Judiciary — is united behind a right-wing agenda for which George W. Bush believes he now has a mandate.

That mandate includes the power of the state to force pregnant women to give up control over their own lives.

It includes using the taxing power to transfer wealth from working people to the rich.

It includes giving corporations a free hand to eviscerate the environment and control the regulatory agencies meant to hold them accountable.

And it includes secrecy on a scale you cannot imagine. Above all, it means judges with a political agenda appointed for life. If you liked the Supreme Court that put George W. Bush in the White House, you will swoon over what's coming.

And if you like God in government, get ready for the Rapture. These folks don't even mind you referring to the GOP as the party of God. Why else would the new House Majority Leader say that the Almighty is using him to promote 'a Biblical worldview' in American politics?

So it is a heady time in Washington — a heady time for piety, profits, and military power, all joined at the hip by ideology and money.

Don't forget the money. It came pouring into this election, to both parties, from corporate America and others who expect the payback. Republicans outraised democrats by $184 million dollars. And came up with the big prize — monopoly control of the American government, and the power of the state to turn their ideology into the law of the land. Quite a bargain at any price.

I too am tired of this lament. I've never understood the whole fallacy of "choice", ex post. Of course women have the right to choose; they have the right to choose before the engage in the act whether or not they are willing to accept the possible outcomes, one of which, is preganancy. The desire to make the choice after the fact is just an idiotic argument. I'd like to see someone try that in Vegas. Oh, did I say black? I meant to bet on red, pay me please.

Why does the Republican controlled House of Representatives continue to finance part of the PBS budget when they don't even get a right of reply to this extreme left winger?

This was written for taxpayer-supported PBS? Might be time to reconsider Moyers' funding.

I dunno...a search of the Corporation For Public Broadcasting's website shows only a single program about schools with Bill Moyers, back in 1996, funded by public money (about $223,000). I know that most, if not all the money he makes comes from other source.

That said, it's somewhat difficult to figure out who funds what - the show itself appears to be funded by PBS, but individual programs appear to be privately funded.

What'd be really interesting to see is the grant applications to PBS - see if conservative program proposals are being turned down, or if they're just not coming in in the first place.

Thanks for the post as I never have listened to PBS. I would have missed this completely.

I recently talked to a friend who works for a state public broadcasting regime. I have no way to validate this, so take it for the second-hand anecdote that it is: He told me that during their most recent pledge drive, Bill Moyers' show was the only one they got NO comments about. People always call in and say "I'll give you money if you promise to keep X on," or "I'm not giving you a dime until you take Y off the air!", but nobody said a damn thing about his show. It literally doesn't register.

But, But CPB is required by law to facilitate objectivity and balance in programming of a controversial nature (C). Yeah right....call you congress critter and ask to see the report under section (3). Hint: it doesn't exist!

Objectivity and balance amendment to Public Telecommunications Act of 1992CPB from its start had always had responsibility for ensuring "objectivity and balance" in programming that it funded, but on June 2, 1992, the U.S. Senate amended the House bill including CPB's reauthorization (H.R. 2977) to add related responsibilities. Amendments were accepted by the House and signed by the President in August. Text below is from the act as signed by the President.

Objectivity and Balance Policy, Procedures and Report

SEC. 19. Pursuant to the existing responsibility of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting under section 396(g)(1)(A) of the Communications Act of 1934 (47 U.S.C. 396(g)(1)(A)) to facilitate the full development of public telecommunications in which programs of high quality, diversity, creativity, excellence, and innovation, which are obtained from diverse sources, will be made available to public telecommunications entities, with strict adherence to objectivity and balance in all programs or series of programs of a controversial nature, the Board of Directors of the Corporation shall--

(1) review the Corporation's existing efforts to meet its responsibility under section 396(g)(1)(A);

(2) after soliciting the views of the public, establish a comprehensive policy and set of procedures to--

(A) provide reasonable opportunity for members of the public to present comments to the Board regarding the quality, diversity, creativity, excellence, innovation, objectivity, and balance of public broadcasting services, including all public broadcasting programming of a controversial nature, as well as any needs not met by those services;

(B) review, on a regular basis, national public broadcasting programming for quality, diversity, creativity, excellence, innovation, objectivity, and balance, as well as for any needs not met by such programming;

(C) on the basis of information received through such comment and review, take such steps in awarding programming grants pursuant to clauses (ii)(II), (iii)(II), and (iii)(III) of section 396(k)(3)(A) of the Communications Act of 1934 (47 U.S.C. 396(k)(3)(A)) that it finds necessary to meet the Corporation's responsibility under section 396(g)(1)(A), including facilitating objectivity and balance in programming of a controversial nature; and

(D) disseminate among public broadcasting entities information about its efforts to address concerns about objectivity and balance relating to programming of a controversial nature so that such entities can utilize the Corporation's experience in addressing such concerns within their own operations; and

(3) starting in 1993, by January 31 of each year, prepare and submit to the President for transmittal to the Congress a report summarizing its efforts pursuant to paragraphs (1) and (2).
