SEATTLE CAROLYN Harrison, 42, has enough on her plate. A mother of two school-age children, she teaches English and coaches girls' basketball at a Catholic high school in Tacoma, and is working toward certification as a school administrator. But now she also finds herself trying to overturn the nasty legacy of a 19th-century senator.
She is a plaintiff (as is a student at Eastern Washington University) in litigation (undertaken by the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Justice) that may reach the U.S. Supreme Court.
It could overturn laws - 37 states, including all Western states, have them - that are residues of an ugly bigotry. Today these laws are the last recourse of opponents of school choice.
Harrison is neither a Catholic nor a crusader for school choice, and she knows little about Republican Sen. James G. Blaine of Maine. But she has been told that because of a law associated with him - a law reflecting anti-Catholic sentiments he exploited - she cannot perform the required (by the University of Washington, Tacoma, where she is enrolled) administrative internship at her school, Bellarmine Preparatory, a Jesuit school.
The university is merely following state policy, Click Here for rest of article

Our friends at JWR have asked us not to post the entire article, and I have complied. Please click over to read about a fascinating case.

I for one am on strike against all these posts that say "click here for entire article". These are clear efforts to increase site visits for obscure and even not so obscure places. Only 2 reasons justify requiring another click--
A very lengthy article; or
A ComPost or Newsweak article that is subject to the legal restrictions.
I come here to read articles in their entirety, and then read people's comments. If I wanted to visit myriad other sites, I'd be there to begin with.

Blaine's laws were also recognized by (and avoided by) the Wisconsin school-choice legislation drafters. That's why the vouchers go to the PARENTS, who then endorse them over to a particular school.
Besides, that method also indirectly acknowledges the primacy of the PARENT in educating the child.
BTW, our little Scott McC could have made a race of it if he had only gone to 3rd/North and loudly proclaimed his loyalty to "school Choice for ALL." He would have made a lot of friends and saved the taxpayers a LOT OF MONEY.
Oh, well.

Why? And who is us? Just wonderingI thought everyone knew about this. JWR is a struggling website that provides a wealth of conservative articles for our enjoyment and edification. The owner needs the pings to boost his advertising revenue in order to keep operating.
"Us" are the members of FreeRepublic. Most of "us" co-operate in this simple request.

If I wanted to visit myriad other sites, I'd be there to begin with.Your screen name says it all. Clicking to another site is such a simple matter that it hardly seems worth it to argue about it. After all JWR is not asking us to register (although you can and receive the whole newletter for free like I do). I don't mind giving this young man a click or two when he provides me with such interesting reading.

Makes sense to me...as long as it's a request and not a demand of some nonexistant copyright law...I'll ping 'em.

It would have been helpful if Tommy had told his little brother to sit down and shut up too! And all those selfish suburban mayors with their "Anybody but McCallum" campaign didn't help either.

...as long as it's a request and not a demand of some nonexistant copyright law...Thank you. It's worth it to sign up for daily delivery of the newsletter too. It's not just for Jews. There is a wealth of good columns every day, and I enjoy the editor's marginal notes guiding me to the best -- since I don't have time to read all.

I'm sure the Teachers' Unions do NOT want prospective teachers doing their student teaching in private and parochial schools. Once the student teachers see the relative calm in those non-public schools, the Unions would have a hard time getting them to teach in the public schools.

OK, just be up front about it. "Here's an interesting article, which I'm
not posting in its entirety, because I want to tease you into going to the web site and increasing the web site's advertising revenue. However, the author is a nice young man who provides interesting reading, so your extra effort would be worth it."
That would be an honest disclaimer for whenever you do this.
My broadband has not been working, so when I click on these third party sites, and have to wait forever for a bunch of banner ads and graphics to load, I notice it more now than I normally do. Oh, and the screen name dates from the Clinton days, when use of a real name here was a sure-fire way to get attention from Federal agencies. It's not a general attitude, except with respect to those who would seek to destroy our liberties.

Sorry you are having trouble with your broadband. JWR does not have pop up ads -- just banners across the top. And I am not trying to promote them -- just do them (and interested readers) a favor. Posting an excerpt of their articles (provided free) and a link has been a long established custom on FreeRepublic because many of us appreciate the service JWR provides. I imagine the proliferation of pop ups on most web sites really curtails your surfing. By all means, stay away from Lucianne.com -- it'll drive you crazy.
