Or so I've been told by all those intellectuals at university. . .did they lie to me?

Well, there's bi-sexual for sure. Then you have all those combinations of trangendered people that you always see on Jerry Springer. Like a gay man who has his weenie cut off and becomes a woman, but decides he really likes women and so becomes a transgendered lesbian. And so on...

Add asexual and hermaphrodite to the list. That gives us 6, I can't think of anymore.

Well, yeah. Strictly speaking gender is a grammatical category, it is an attribute of words. In the Germanic languages it assumes ONE of the states: masculine, feminine or neuter. In the modern romance languages masculine or feminine. (Latin had a neuter gender.) Sex is a biological category. In mammals it is either male or female.
