Statement by Senator Bill Frist on the 2002 Election Results

Tuesday, November 5, 2002 was a milestone in the electoral history of the United States. The American people voted to elect more candidates - rather than less - from the President’s political Party, returning Republicans to the Senate Majority.

There are so many who played a role in our historic victory. First and foremost is the President of the United States. It is his vision, his common sense approach to our nation’s challenges, and his unprecedented leadership that inspired and motivated so many. His tireless efforts on the behalf of Republican candidates cannot be overstated in their value to the election of so many.

Our incumbent Senators and challengers were some of the best ever - and not just in terms of their ability to organize and campaign and turn out the vote. These men and women are indeed some of the best and the brightest, dedicated and focused political leaders in America. They will serve their states and our nation with great integrity and courage.

My colleagues in the United States Senate were the best team members I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. They traveled from Montana to Georgia, New Hampshire to Minnesota to help our candidates. They not only helped raise money - they contributed their own funds to our efforts. And their counsel and ideas helped shape much of our efforts nationwide.

Most importantly, however, are the American people. They have given us this unprecedented opportunity to work with the President of the United States and the House of representatives, as the leadership party in the Senate. Our duty is to them. We will do everything in our power, every single day, to serve them in a manner worthy of the great trust they have placed in us.

John F. Kennedy once said that leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

We have all learned a great deal as we have traveled across America these last two years. What we have learned from the people of the United States will help us be better leaders on their behalf.

We have many challenges.

We have to concentrate on helping our economy - giving the creation of good jobs priority status. We need to deal with a broad range of issues from Prescription drug benefits for older Americans to homeland security to a comprehensive energy policy for the United States. We need to pass a budget, confirm judges and provide permanent tax relief.

And we have to do it all in a common sense fashion.

That means putting party labels aside as we work through honest, legitimate differences to reach these mutual goals. We will work in good faith with all of our Senate colleagues to get things done.

George W. Bush is a "Can-Do" President.

We will be a “Can-do” Senate to help him make progress for America.

Ronald Reagan used to invoke FDR and Harry Truman and JFK as models of American greatness and leadership. That was the last time the Democrats represented ordinary Americans - in their golden age. Bill Frist is tweaking their nose by reminding the losers how far they've strayed from the figures and values that once made the Democrats great and I think he does not mean Bubba.

This is great! I have the utmost respect for Senator Frist and all the work he has done. We really have great leaders right now. My gratitude to the President also has no bounds. What he did for our candidates was beyond the call of duty and it made a huge difference. Another thing I noticed while reading this was how positive and upbeat it is. Just compare this to the negative, hateful things the Democrats write and say. We are in the right party, my friends. I am so proud!

Trent Lott is the President's man. I can presume from the secret deal (mentioned here on other FR threads) with Tommy Daschund, it was certainly made at the President's bidding. The President wants to let the Democrats keep their pride in accordance with his "no gloat" injunction and I imagine in return for their being allowed to keep committee chairmanships and assignments til January, they had to drop their obstructionism and give the President what he wants. And if Tommy Daschund doesn't live up to his agreement we take charge come January. So for once the Dems will be good boys and girls and do what they're told.

I got a phone call from the RNC today. The first thing the young man said is, "I'm not calling for money" LOL!

Then he proceeded to thank me for my past support and gave a little we couldn't have done it without people like you pat on the back.

I thought it was very classy of them to take the time to call people after the battle had been won.

If you had bothered to read those threads closely you would have read that what was said was not true.

There was no deal reached! The Senate does not have time to reorganize committees not to mention the fact that Talent has not been certified by MO and seated in the Senate so we do not have the majority.

Now go back and read the rumor threads for the truth. Deport actually posted MO law which some Freepers cannot seem to comprehend.

There was no deal! They are following the rules of the Senate! Now what part of that do you not understand?

Hey, Kennedy is the best Democrat President I can remember. He believed in tax cuts to grow the economy, believed in free markets, and much more you would probably agree with.

I'd put a JFK in every Dem seat in Congress if I could.

Contrast a guy like JFK with McDermott and Bonior, who travelled to a foreign counrty to support a murderous tyrant, and said he was more trust worthy than our own President.

The Senate is creature that moves slowly and it can't be changed on a dime and any way the real work doesn't begin til January. Whatever really happened behind the scenes to move the agenda in this lame duck session, I am confident of one thing: the Democrats won't be putting up a lot of resistance now even if they do have a majority til January. They've been chastened by their election losses and they have new found respect for a President they thought was dumb as a box of rocks. Rest assured, they won't make the mistake of viewing Dubya as a "little man" again.

You are so right! Wonder what daschle is thinking now? Remember when he refused to go along with the Iraq resolution and failed to show up in the Rose Garden? Big mistake!
