McDaniel is a damned idiot and a Naifeh collaborator and he absolutely needs to be dumped. Our State Republican leaders are gutless wonders who refuse to play hardball with the Democrats. First off, his saying how GRACIOUS the 'Rats were with us on redistricting is an obscenity. The Republican party on VOTE TOTALS has been the majority for at least the last 3 elections. We deserve the majority and remain the minority because of deliberate GOP disenfranchisement due to gerrymandering. We've been getting screwed by these a$$holes since we "accidentally" won parity in 1968 and elected now-Congressman Bill Jenkins Speaker of the House. The Dems won back the majority in '70 and proceeded to screw us in every redraw ever since (first with McWherter & crew, now with Boss Hogg). Until we can "crack" through those narrow Dem wins to seize these seats, we'll continue to get screwed. It took a century+ for the Virginia Republicans to win their legislature despite obscene gerrymandering, and when they finally did and got a chance to draw the seats fairly, they went from dead even to 2/3rds of the House. Now, with Phil Bredesundquist as Governor, this may provide us with a prime opportunity to make gains (and we ALWAYS make gains in the successive elections after the initial gerrymander screw in years ending with "2" ('72, '82, '92), and the fact we gained 3 seats or so this time rather than losing between 6 or 8 shows this may be the decade we finally break through). What we need is to specifically target winnable races where Dems won by razor-thin margins (the new Rutherford County seat comes to mind where a Dem won by an extremely slim margin in a GOP area) and start recruiting candidates NOW and most importantly, raising money now. Pharoah Phil can't implement his "vision" without substantial tax increases (read: income tax), and we need to exploit this BIG TIME. We need to take only 5 seats for the next election, and we can do it ! At least 3 heavily GOP seats alone in East TN went to the Dems on flukes (Westmoreland's, IIRC; Stancil Ford, pro-IT; and that other crook who should've been booted upon his indictment). The 4th seat is the Rutherford County seat, and with more $$ (and if the Colonel is up to it), Boss Hogg's seat (and this time, the Colonel needs to seriously spend time in Haywood County), which makes 5. We need single-minded GOP leaders and strategists to take this state back for the people, not play pattycakes with the Dems. It's too reminiscent of how the national GOP acted under Bob Michel when they didn't want to "bother" the Dems with actually winning. It took people like Newt Gingrich to slap the party hard across the face... Who will step up to the plate in our state GOP ? Maybe we need someone outside elective office... Well, that's my two cents.
