Delivering a Touch of Home

A Touch of Home

.

This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.

Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.

Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.

This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.

Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.

We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.

So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.

.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Today's FEEBLE attempt at humor:

Mr. Jones patted his daughter's hand fondly, and told her,
"Your young man told me today he wanted you as a bride, and
I gave my consent."

"Oh, Papa," gushed the daughter, "it's going to be so hard
leaving mother."

"I understand perfectly, my dear," beamed Mr. Jones. "You
just take her with you."

Did Ya Know.....?

Katharine Lee Bates wrote the words to the classic American anthem "America The Beautiful" after her trip to the summit of Pikes Peak in 1893.

Today's classic warship, USS Wolverine (IX-64)

Wolverine class aircraft carrier
Displacement. 7,200
Lenght. 500'0"
Beam. 58'1"
Draft. 15'6"
Speed. 18.0 k.
Complement. 325
Armament. none

The USS Wolverine (IX-64)-a side-wheel excursion steamer built in 1913-was originally named Seeandbee, a euphonious name based upon her owners' company name-the Cleveland and Buffalo Transit Co. She was constructed by the American Shipbuilding Co. of Wyandotte, Mich. The Navy acquired the side-wheeler on 12 March 1942 and designated her an unclassified miscellaneous auxiliary, IX-64. Conversion to a training aircraft carrier began on 6 May 1942; and the name Wolverine, commemorating the first ship of the name, was approved on 2 August. Wolverine was commissioned at Buffalo, N.Y., on 12 August 1942, Comdr. George R. Fairlamb in command .

As the Navy's first side-wheeled aircraft carrier, Wolverine was equipped to handle plane take-offs and landings, a vital duty that she performed for the duration of World War II. She contributed to the winning war effort in World War II by trainin g hundreds of pilots in basic carrier operations. During an inspection conducted by the admiral on 27 October 1942, she briefly flew the four-starred flag of the Commander in Chief of the United States Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Ernest J . King.

Her task completed and the war over in the summer of 1945, Wolverine was decommissioned on 7 November 1945 and struck from the Navy list on 28 November. The ship was transferred to the War Shipping Administration on 26 November 1947 and sold later that same year for scrapping.

I had to sign on just to finally say thank you. I have lurked here for some time, and will continue to do so, but I did want to say that I like the information I am able to see here. I like what everyone here does for myself and my family who all support the military. It is much easier to sign on and post then I had imagined :)

I am also happy about the results of the elections.

A Dutch magazine had a small article about how this proved the people wrong about Florida. A lot of people in Europe think Bush 'stole' it.

I wonder what excuse they got now since Jeb won there.

Mornin', everybody ! :O)

Sorry for no graphics. I'm still at my Dad's house. I'm taking him to a doctors appt. today in Tyler. It's his new hand doctor. He had skin graft surgery on his hand/arm and the surgeon said he needed it looked at again in about 10 days or so. It looks like he'll keep most of his mobility/motion in his left hand, but he's lucky because it was pretty ugly looking. Anyway......

We got his pictures back yesterday. Picture #24 & 25 here are of his car when I went to get his personal stuff out of it. This is where it was towed to in Flagler, Colorado.

Frame #24 & #25

Hard for me to imagine he walked away from this. He had to crawl out the drivers side window. None of the doors would open. All the glass was busted out except the front windshield, and, as you can see, it was shattered too.....
