Delivering a Touch of Home

A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.
.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Hi sweet Lady. I see by your 'nick' we have something in common. My Dad was a SeaBee island hopping across the Pacific all the way to mainland China. Many people don't know the last Americans killed in WWII were guys like our Dads ON mainland China by the communist chinese. My Dad ended up in Tinsin (sp?) near Peking. Did your Dad get to China? Does he remember Chubic's Thousand Thieves? LOL My Dad's unit nickname.

"I fell asleep in the back of the paddy wagon. : )"LOL!!! I fell asleep getting my hair cut tonight. Just for a minute mind you. The picture of your Dad and the band and the music were special. Thank you for sharing them with the troops. I'm almost to 400, then I need to get to bed too. God bless you for all the wonderful things you bring to the Canteen for our troops to enjoy.

Thank you for replying to me, Nam Vet. It is an honor to meet you.
So your dad was a SeaBee - what PT islands did he "hop"? Was he on Iwo? (I know they had some airfields to build there - the whole purpose of taking the island was completed by the SeaBees...very important job they had there, and very well done.)
My dad did not get to China, no. Briefly: He was a combat medic (PhM2c) serving with the Fourth Marine Division; he was headed out of a shell crater with a stretcher when he took a lot of shrapnel, and he was paralyzed at that point (he recovered eventually); he remained there, on Iwo Jima, unable to move his body for eight hours before he finally got evac. That's the last he saw of the Pacific War.
And that was probably enough. ; )
I wish I could ask him if he knew about your dad's unit. (He's no longer living.)
If your father is living, please give him the most warmest regards and respect from the proud daughter of a PTO veteran.
Again, so nice to meet you. Please don't be a stranger. You have my utmost respect and gratitude.
To: Kathy in Alaska
God bless you too, Kathy - and thank you for everything you do here. You are like the Energizer Bunny. : )
To: Snow Bunny
Thank you, Snow Bunny. He would have loved you.

I'm going down to So. Cal. in December for their 60th anniversary. I'll relay the message. He's a good old dude, but always pretty rough on yours truely. I wouldn't have it any different. Sorry your Dad isn't with you anymore. Your love and respect shows by your nick. I'm sure he was always proud of you. You take good care. I think I've just made another good friend. Sleep well.

I'm going to give this
one more shot tonight. I've tried 3 times before but FR was gone before I hit "post". waaaaaaa!
I didn't desert y'all earlier...I just had problems staying on FR. It was great fun tonight and I hated missing part of it. I know most everyone's gone by now and I hope you're all sleeping well. Thank you all for everything you do for the troops here at the Canteen. God bless you!!
Good night, troops! May God watch over you and keep you safe in whatever lies ahead for you.
(((HUGS))) for everyone.
(my fingers are crossed on this attempt. lol)
