I heard Nancy Pelosi is the likely replacement?

Fox News also reports that inside sources say that if Gephardt does announce his resignation from the leadership tommorow, House Minority Whip Nancy Pelosi has the votes to replace him and beat more moderate House Democrat Conference Chairman Martin Frost in the Democrat House leadership vote for House Minority Leader on November 14. Bush Administration sources say a change in House Democrat leadership from Gephardt to the more liberal Pelosi, would aid them in making alliances of convenience with more moderate Democrat House members.

This makes no sense. So basically he is going to run for President in 2004, and if he doesn't win, he will quit the House? I just find that hard to believe. He is basically giving up his career. I can't figure out why not being the minority leader will help him advance his political career (which is the biggest concern with all politicians)
