"...help was needed ..."

Please explain how checking the serial number would help.

"...4.it was a FISHING EXPEDITION...."

I know, but the posters saying it is ok should explain it.

Which side would HamiltonJay be on regarding the Naval Press Gangs? After all, we need able bodied men to man our fleets, and what good citizen would nay say the foricble taking of private citizens seamen in port hang-outs, or off of ships in port or nearby. It's just the needed and rightful thing to do, ain't it?

"Why would you want to talk to an ATF agent?"

He is the next door neighbor to a relative of mine, and I sat next to him in church Sunday a week ago.

Here in Texas you must show your driver's license to purchase ammo.

At Wally World perhaps. Maybe some other places. But I've bought lots of ammunition in Texas without a driver's license check. In fact I don't recall having to show it the last time I bought some (.45ACP in fact) at WalMart, and that was only a couple of months ago, at most. I do remember reading something about WalMart requiring an ID to purchase ammunition, but I don't recall being asked for it. It was the day before the opening of dove season, and lots of folks were buying shotgun shells, and getting their licenses. I've never been dove hunting, but would love to give a whirl sometime. HINT, HINT! (I do have a shotgun, 12GA Browning BPS with 24" barrel, and interchangeable choke tubes)

" We have already given up our liberty and freedoms simply because women and timid males would gladly throw away rights "

Um, not all women would gladly throw away their rights.

You should change that to "some women"

I don't know, personally I think this particular gun owner is quite a jerk. Immediately assumed FBI was out to get him, his actions directly caused what should have been a routine investigative stop needlessly into a confrontational scene

What planet have you been on?? Read the newspapers, not the comics. This man was right on.

Thank you very much for this post. It is right to the point we gun owners are trying to get across to the public.

Please explain the purpose and value of the FBI asking for the serial number of the rifle.

Two purposes, actually:

Quite logical, really.

First, The FBI agents involved had absolutely no reason to suspect anything of this citizen. Second, The agents involved had no reason to be fearful of the press or witnesses. Third, the only statements I made stand as a guide to the FBI to understand that they need the cooperation of citizens in order to do their job effectively.

If the FBI takes the view that anyone not in the Federal Law Enforcement is a potential enemy then they have made their job impossible. Fourth, if these law enforcement agents had spent a little more time and care tracing down the actual leads they had from the multiple stops of the Caprice perhaps several citizens in the DC area would be alive.

I have had the occaision to meet several FBI special agents. Those I know share the same criticism of these agents. All these agents knew was that the individual they were interviewing had purchased a .233 cal rifle within the past ten years and that the individual in question owned a white van. Certainly had they been courteous and professional and not just gone on a fishing expedition and had there not been other reported problems with property not being returned to citizens there would not have been a problem.

In short my ciricism remains the same. Instead of being seen as a professional organization persuing assorted major criminals the FBI's image has degenerated too much and every single additional abuse damages the effectiveness of that organization.

In short do not mistake a demand for improvement in effectiveness with a hatered of the organization per se.

Let us presume that the pattern of killings had indicated that a person espousing a Liberal point of view was pssibly behind the killings. Let us presume that the murder weapon was say a hammer. Would rousting every member of the carpeter's union be considered to be a legitimate tactic? I think not.

There are any number of scenarios that one could conjure up with any number of other targets where the outrage wuld be universal. I am also incensed that local vetrans with no record whatsoever were considered high on the list by some law enforcement. Yes, even though one of the two alleged to be the sniper(s) was a US Army veteran. They were not just targeting regular army troopsd they were focusing on Special Operations veterans when there was no evidence that any shot was particularly a long range shot.

I have no objection to the FBI persuing leads and investigating and I usually will cooperate with any law enforcement but in this case were I confronted with the same request I would have stated I do NOT discuss what I might own for firearms with officers potentially targeting me in an investigation. If you wish to examine any property of mine please obtain a search warrant.

Agreed. ---But it is amusing that the serial number defenders couldn't figure it out.

There is nothing lower than the abuse of power by a law enforcement agent.

Instead of closing up the A.T.F., it seems that the the F.B.I. has become the A.T.F.

LOL!

It didn't work out...

The sporting goods cashier got tired of taking my wages out to my car on payday.

"Why didn't you trust us?" one agent asked.

Two words: Lon Horiuchi.

"These laws [that suppossedly prevent one from recording one's own conversations with or without consent of other parties involved] do have teeth..."

Prove it. Show it. Don't bother quoting the law ... show the successful, standing prosecutions, fines and time -- if you can.

Re your #193....First, The FBI agents involved had absolutely no reason to suspect anything of this citizen.

And specifically what facts do you have to support your assertion?
