With less than 48 hours before the election, Carl McCall again criticized the national Democratic Party yesterday for not doing enough to help him oust Gov. Pataki. McCall - who trails by a wide margin in his effort to become the state's first black governor - said during a live radio interview that he was disappointed with the Democratic Party's efforts.
Asked specifically whether national Democratic leaders have left minority supporters in the lurch, McCall said:
"Let's get down to the bottom of it: I think that I'm not happy with what the party's done for me."
Last month, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Harlem), the Rev. Al Sharpton and McCall all griped that Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe was falling down on promised financial support for McCall's candidacy.
"I was disappointed in what happened," McCall told KISS-FM on the air yesterday.
"Terry McAuliffe said that he didn't think that I could win, and therefore, the commitment that he made, they didn't fulfill it.
"Because Al Sharpton and others, Charlie Rangel, made some noise about it ... Terry McAuliffe showed up and gave me more money than he had promised. But again, that's what it took to do it."
McCall warned that just as black voters should not vote for him because of his race, the Democratic Party should not take any voters for granted.
"People are going to be very independent in terms of their vote, and they should be independent," he said. "I don't think we should be automatically Democrats [or] automatically anything else.
"We have to continue to demonstrate that we're going to go with the party and the people who are going to stand with us."
A spokesman for McAuliffe did not return calls last night.
Assemblyman Denny Farrell (D-Manhattan), chairman of the Democratic State Committee, declined to comment on McCall's criticisms.
"I know that the people in New York State, the Democratic organizations, have worked very hard for him," Farrell said. "Whether we win or lose, we have done it unified."
I like that statement.
Once this election is over, the infighting in the NY State Democratic Party is going to be bloody and great fun to watch. Even Hillary and Billary are going to get splattered. Schumer too.
NY's white liberals sure do like the black man, unless he's looking to become the most powerful political man in the state. That's just a little too uppity for the "Driving Miss Daisy" liberals to stomach.
McAuliffe has to go, I agree.
Nita Lowey knew her place and bowed out for HRC... cowardly but she's still around.
Andy Cuomo was the Clintons choice... McCall just polled higher.
They gave him lip support and dropped him like a hot potato.
White liberals love black folks... as long as they don't move next to them.
Clinton stabbing McCall in the back; Sharpton saying nothing. Just black on black crime. The media and the NYT aren't interested. They want white on black or Republican on black crime. Dems sticking it to McCall? Not of interest. And, none of you blacks better even think of doing anything rash. All you field hands belong to the dems and don't you ever forget it.
Interesting point. Someone told me that one of Karl Rove's favorite election strategies is to take a sure-win state and have the Republican candidate "tank" for a while just to get the Democratic candidate's poll numbers up. Then the Democrats, thinking they have a chance to win, withdraw resources from other closely-contested states and campaign heavily in that state, only to lose both places in the end.
I have an acquaintance who is a highly educated black man. He told me about how he used to be on the board of a local charity, and some white liberals came up to him one night after the meeting. "Les, you're a highly educated black man, would you like to be mayor? We could put you there if you just say the right things, and we can tell you what those things are."
even though my friend is a liberal, he told them to PISS OFF
...not too many brothers in Chappaqua, you know...
One caveat: NO money has ever been made being short the Clintons. It is best to assume they will assess and capitalize on whatever transpires.
The Democrats need some new leadership. Thank God they're so out of touch with reality!
