It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer who has given us freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.
It is the soldier who has made and will continue to make the United States of America the greatest nation on earth.

My father was just a scruffy, "Bad Ass" eighteen year old kid when he joined the Air Force. He didn't speak very much about the bad stuff he experienced in Germany during WWII, but he did entertain us with some witty shenanigans he and his fellow soldiers pulled while there. (They actually stole (uh.. I mean borrowed) a jeep and went chic cruising one night- they caught h-e-l-l for it when they finally came dragging in the next morning. LOL!
Anyway, he was never afraid of anything at any time, a true "Bad Ass" if there ever was one. It didn't stop him from choking up every now and then, in spite of him saying he just had something in his eye.
God Bless you and thank you, Smitty!
