Had he created a tacit university endorsement by his association? What? Thousands of professors all across the land participate in Democrat politics in every possible way, from fundraisers, to writing issue pieces, to letters to the editor, to direct involvement with party activities, to, above all, the incessant indoctrination of their students.
But if a coach wants to participate, somehow that is wrong? Somehow THAT creates a tacit university endorsement? A basketball coach speaks more authoritatively for a university than its faculty?
What a hypocritical double standard!
In any case, I just found my favorite new college basketball team. Go Blue Devils!

Good Lord, do I have to like Mike Krzyzewski now?
I wonder what Dukie Vitale will have to say about this?

I remember sometime here in the late 70's NC State basketball coach Norm Sloan in Raleigh caught quite a bit of grief for his public support of Jesse Helms.

This article made it sound as if he did something wrong, but never quite says it. The Duke Inn may be owned by Duke, but it's a hotel open to the public. There is NOTHING wrong with having a political event there. So if someone on campus wants to invite a political speaker or hold a fundraiser after paying to rent the rooms at the Duke Inn, what the HECK is wrong with that?

Didn't Coach K graduate from West Point in '68 or so? Didn't he coach the Army team in the early or mid-70s?
She forgot to slam him on that.

Bobby Knight use to support moderate Republican candidates, but they were usually pro-abort so I guess that made it OK.

The issue caused a stir from Asheville to Kitty Hawk. Even the Duke newspaper, The Chronicle, criticized the unsavory appearance of Krzyzewski's role in the reception. It was like being heckled by his own Cameron Crazies. Suddenly, Coach Klean had been sullied, as if his halo had been made of nothing more than tinfoil and pipe cleaners. For some reason, the meticulous coach who had always kept a lid on his politics in the past hadn't anticipated a game plan for the outrage. Holy cow...is this carpola New York Times-worthy nowadays? This is "news fit to print"?
Is Ms. Roberts a news reporter, or a Maureen Dowd-wannabe?

Plus, Matt Doherty works for the STATE of North Carolina. Coach K. works for a private university.
They did the same thing to Lou Holtz when he came out for Jesse Helms back in the '70s or early 80's. He was warned never to do that again, as he works for NC. But nary a word when the fundraiser for Bowles was announced with Doherty's name on it, altho he works for NC too.
It is shocking actually....but remember that most of the students at Duke are NOT from these parts. They are from the northeast....
But, I have a new favorite team to cheer for...eventho my hubby is a UNC fan...my heart belongs to Coach K!!!

In my book, Coach K is a PTPer. The Republican party could use some more diaper dandies.

"Some suspect that Krzyzewski came to Dole's side after Smith attached his name to Erskine Bowles, the Democrat in the Senate race." |
And still stickin' it to that left-wing wacko Dean Smith, 'cause I suspect that's exactly why he did it.

"I really think a lot of the talk is partisan," said Munger, who, in full disclosure, admitted he was a Republican... "Not as much as many might think, but universities tend to be on the left. Nah! Ya think?
