Are any of you getting a pop up add from themensnetwork.com, when on Free Republic. This thing is a homosexual porno piece of trash that pops up full screen when I am reading FreeRepublic. Is there anything that can be done to keep the add from poping up?

get a aware from lavasoftusa.com
You've been hit with a piece of ad spamware. FR uses no ad pop ups.

Nope. You must have some type of spyware on your computer. Get Adaware, it's free. :)

I think you picked up that little jewel somewhere else!

Another suggestion (though you should get rid of that from your drive with Ad Aware) is also to use another browser that doesn't allow pop-ups (Mozilla comes to mind).

How many people are going to click on this thread because of the title and be disappointed?

NoAds software from southbaypc.com. It is free and works well in killing pop-up ads.
To: em2vn
"Just when you thought e-mail spam was bad enough, along comes Direct Advertiser software, which can send pop-up messages directly to users' desktops. These pop-up messages appear even if the user is not in e-mail or an Internet browser. The software utilizes Microsoft's Messenger Windows service, which is turned on by default (on WinNT, 2000, and XP systems) and used by administrators to send messages to users on the network. This is different from the MSN Messenger instant message software."
"The Messenger service normally uses ports 137 and 139, which are usually protected; but the DirectAdvertiser software seemingly allows pop-up ads to use port 135, which is normally left open on firewalls for the Microsoft RPC service."

I was at least hoping that it was someone complaining about Anna Kournikova photos, and then we'd have to post a bunch and discuss them.

I've never seen a popup on FreeRepublic. You need Ad-Aware. And you might look into another program at CamTech called Cookie Spy. You may have some porno cookies that are doing this to you. You can pick these up if you visit some marginal sites that aren't pornographic, I think, or if you have other people using your computer. Or just from some hacker or spammer. Just be careful which cookies you delete, to avoid losing passwords and the like at sites that you use.

FR does not have any pop-ups.
There is "scumware" on your hard drive. Scumware opens pop-ups, and spies on you as well.
Go here: Click Here. (Will open in new window.)
Download Ad-Aware and Refupdate.
Install both. Run Refupdate to get the latest updates. Then run Ad-Aware and kill off all scumware on your computer.
Ad-Aware is to scumware as Norton is to viruses. Refupdate gets you the latest definitions of scumware. You need Refupdate, Ad-Aware must be updated just like an anti-virus program needs to be updated.
