"Capital Gang" Liberals Predict Democrat Victories

CNN's "Capital Gang" Saturday by 4-1 margins predicted Democrat victories for the U.S. Senate and the governorships. The members disagreed on House predictions, but none saw a Democrat majority in the making for the House. Host Mark Shields saw Democrats winning nearly ever close race, even the FL governorship. Fellow liberal Al Hunt thought the Republican Jim Talent would prevail in MO but otherwise saw Democrat victories in SD, MA, and even the MD governorship. Margaret Carlson of Newsweek saw full Democrat victories too except for MO.
Conservative Bob Novak saw narrow Republican victories in the close races, including MO, SD, the MA governorship -- Romney, and MN Senate race -- Coleman.
All panelists agreed that popular Democrat Mark Pryor would restore AR to a nearly all-Democrat congressional delegation with the expected defeat of Sen. Tim Hutchinson, plagued by an unpopular divorce. But Novak claimed that Mark Pryor is not as shrewd politically as his father, former Sen. David Pryor.
All except Novak were convinced that Walter F. Mondale will return to the same MN seat that he vacated on January 20, 1977. Novak's colleagues noted with glee that Mondale is only three years older than Novak. Novak though claimed with his customary humor that "Mondale looks older than" he.
The panelists did not discuss CA, CO, or the Carolinas, where recent polls show huge last-minute gain by Democrats Erskine Bowles and Alex Sanders in senatorial races against Elizabeth Dole and Lindsey Graham.

My only comment is why would anybody watch a program where Margaret Carlson is a participant .

They also replayed the panel's predictions for the 1994 House elections and Novak was the only one who saw the Republicans winning over 50 House seats and taking over the House majority. Lets hope his record continues unblemished!

So basically ... the liberals think that the liberals will win the upcoming election.
Anybody here surprised?

Watch the Beltway boys instead. They had a one hour show today instead of the usual half an hour and gave their opinion as to who they think will win. Larry Sabato was their guest for today's broadcast.

I actually took it as a good sign that they were being so restrained - Al Hunt only predicted a pickup of one senate seat. To me that bodes pretty well for our side. Maxie Shields was only saying who he "wanted" to win, not who he really thought would win. Chicken.

Thanks for the summary... spares me the agony of actually watching that bile... As for Florida... even Eleanor Clift admits that McBride is toast.

I haven't watched in a couple of years. Is Shields still drunk? Does Mr Judy Woodruff still sport his 60s frat-boy haircut?

CNN... weren't they one of the networks people watched once upon a time?

The '94 victories were a surprise to many, as the polls understated the Republican totals. However in 2000 many of us were convinced that Bush would win by at least 5 points...I'll never be over confident again of a conservative victory (and no, I don't mean to imply that GWB is my idea of a conservative, but considering the alternative...)

Don't ever discount the impact that the last minute Bush-DUI revelation had on the 2000 race.

I'm from Minnesota and here's my take: It's not a slam dunk that the would-be Wellstone voters are going to rally behind Mondale. They definitely won't be going for Coleman either; a lot will just stay away from the polls this Tuesday or throw their support behind the Green party to get them above 5%. Wellstone had a strong following in academia and many of the students who I talked to just aren't that excited about Mondale; they probably won't vote. That, and the fact that Bush is coming to St. Paul on Sunday, will give Coleman the edge.

My opinion is that they will get Mondale sobered up in time to make his concession speech Thursday morning after the vote count has determined that they couldn't possibly steal enough votes to elect him.

I work in the media (radio -- I got out of TV by choice), and I can assure you that nobody on these shows knows any more about what is going to happen on Tuesday than you do. They may know even less, since they live inside a bubble of Beltway liberalism and never meet an actual breathing, conservative human from the other 99% of America's land mass. They go on TV and give opinions like this because CNN has to fill an hour of airtime, and they are dumb enough to pay these people to do it for them. Just ignore talk shows and polls, let them neither encourage nor discourage you, go out Tuesday to vote, and accept that nobody will know who won until a bunch of liberal judges finally rule on all the lawsuits the Democrats are going to file.

Where the blazing Hades was Kate O'Beirne. Usually, the liberal powers that be at CNN insist that liberals outnumber "conservatives" by 3-2. Apparently, however, their polling data is sooooo bad, that they had to boot O'Beirne and replace her with a CNN political correspondent (anyone care to guess her political leanings?) so that it was a 4-1 majority. No bias there.

"Capital Gang" is the ONLY CNN show I watch all week -- the only one. I used to never miss "Crossfire" but no more.

The last ditch effort to demoralize the Republicans. Jerks!
