Governor Bush Receives “Guardian of Senior Citizens” Award

Tallahassee - Governor Jeb Bush was recognized by the 60 Plus Association with the “Guardian of Senior Citizens” Award for his great work for the senior citizens of Florida.

“I am honored to be recognized by the 60 Plus Association,” said Governor Bush. “I have worked hard over the last four years to ensure that our seniors are receiving needed services and are treated with dignity and respect in their golden years.”

The more than 34,000 members of the nonpartisan group cited the Governor’s record on the following issues:

Silver Saver program which guarantees that Florida’s senior citizens can afford critical and life-saving medication and lowers the costs of these drugs;

Commitment to providing long-term care;

Developing strategies for promoting home and community-based services;

Strengthening health care for senior citizens while protecting them from excessive costs and duplication; and

Working to eliminate the intangibles tax, which hurts senior citizens, and destroys family farms and small businesses.

In their letter to the Governor, James Martin, president of the association said, “Your record on senior citizens issues has been outstanding. You are a true friend of Florida’s senior citizens. On behalf of the 60 Plus we are pleased to award you our “Guardian of Senior Citizens” Award for your help for senior citizens.”

BTW, GW actually won the senior vote in FL in Nov 2000. And, Gov Bush has always had strong support from this demographic.

Good for Gov Bush, for winning this award from a non-partisian group of FL seniors!

I think it was a record number of responses -- 417 total posts -- I received to an editorial I wrote awhile ago, before the Dem Primary, about an innovate way Gov Bush has been helping seniors (the FL "Elder Ready Communities" article from the NYT). You can read it by clicking HERE.

Ahem. I like 60 Plus, but they are about as nonpartisan as AARP. If I recall correctly, Jim Martin makes great hay of the fact that he was the first to employ Dubya out of college.

That was an interesting article, and posted right on their site, too! Also, I read this, on their "About us" page:

The 60 Plus Association is a non-partisan seniors advocacy group with a free enterprise, less government, less taxes approach to seniors issues. 60 Plus has set ending the federal estate tax and saving Social Security for the young as its top priorities. 60 Plus is often viewed as the conservative alternative to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

Sounds like they think "non-partisian" and "conservative" mean the same thing! Or, maybe they are trying to say you don't have to be conservative to join. I am just guessing here. Thanks for the link! :)
