Delivering a Touch of Home

A Touch of Home

.

This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.

Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.

Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.

This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

Snow Bunny

.

.

.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.

Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.

We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.

So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.

.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

State Seal

The seal of the State of Rhode Island features a maritime anchor as its central image. The anchor has been used as a symbol for Rhode Island for hundreds of years, well before the region claimed statehood. When the Providence Plantations were organized in the mid 1600's, the anchor was used then as the seal of the province. The anchor is also the prominent image on Rhode Island's flag. The word "Hope" was placed over the seal's anchor in 1644, and still remains. The outer circle of the seal reads "Seal of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations 1636".

State Flag

In 1897, Rhode Island was the third of the original thirteen colonies to legally adopt a state flag. Its close neighbors, New York and New Jersey, were first in 1896. The flag's colors, white and blue, are the same colors flown by Rhode Island soldiers' during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Mexican War. The white also represents the facings (collars, lapels and cuffs) of the Rhode Island Revolutionary War uniforms. The thirteen yellow stars represent the thirteen original states. The anchor has been a symbol of Rhode Island since 1643 maybe because of its 400 miles of coastline and its love for sailing and boating. The people of Rhode Island may also have gotten the idea for the anchor from words from the Bible. A blue banner under the anchor has the state's motto, "Hope."

State Tree

Did you know in the 1890s Rhode Island school children also voted the Red Maple as the state's tree? However, it didn't become official until 1964. During the autumn months the tree's leaves can turn golden, purple, or scarlet red. Rhode Islanders feel the Red Maple adds to the beauty of their forest during all seasons, especially in the autumn. But it received its name from the bright red flowers that bloom on it in late spring. The trees grow throughout eastern North America. They grow in cold climates like Canada and hot climates like Texas and Florida. Its leaves are 2 to 6 inches across and most have three lobes (think of the shape of your ear lobe) sometimes five lobes. Red Maples can grow to 120 feet in height.

State Flower

In 1897 school children voted the purple violet as their state flower. It did not become official until 1968 making Rhode Island the last state to adopt a state flower. The violet is the state flower for three other states. It is a perennial flower meaning it lives through the colder months and blossoms in the spring. Their leaves are heart-shaped and the flowers grow on separate stems from the leaves. It blooms in early spring and the flower's color ranges from a deep to medium purple.

State Bird

The Rhode Island Red was not Rhode Island's first state bird. In the 1930s the bobwhite was voted as the official state bird, but in 1964 a new state bird was chosen, the Rhode Island Red. The Rhode Island Red is a type of hen or chicken. This type of hen was bred in a small town named Little Compton, Rhode Island in 1854. It has brown feathers, lays brown eggs, and weighs six to nine pounds. It quickly became known for its delicious meat and the wonderful quality and quantity of the eggs it laid. The raising of poultry (chickens and turkeys) became a major industry in the United States thanks to the Rhode Island Red!

State Fish

The striped bass is the largest member of the sea bass family, often called "temperate" or "true" bass to distinguish it from species such as largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass which are actually members of the sunfish family Centrarchidae. Although Morone is of unknown derivation, saxatilis is Latin meaning "dwelling among rocks." As with other true basses, the dorsal fin is clearly separated into spiny and soft-rayed portions. Striped bass are silvery, shading to olive-green on the back and white on the belly, with seven or eight uninterrupted horizontal stripes on each side of the body. Younger fish may resemble white bass (Morone chrysops). However, striped bass have two distinct tooth patches on the back of the tongue, whereas white bass have one tooth patch. Striped bass have two sharp points on each gill cover, and white bass have one. Additionally, the second spine on the anal fin is about half the length of the third spine in striped bass, and about two-thirds the length of the third spine in white bass.

Rhode Island Army National Guard

The Rhode Island Army National Guard maintains 16 armories, and is present in 13 communities.

The Rhode Island Army National Guard traces its history from the first colonial defensive force established in the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island in 1638. This group of citizen soldiers consisted of two sergeants, two corporals, and one clerk. From this humble beginning the State's military grew, providing forces in many conflicts during the pre-revolutionary period, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, the Mexican Border, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and most recently Stabilization Forces (SFOR) in the Balkans.

Today, the Rhode Island Army National Guard consists of a force of over 2,500 dedicated men and women, who are prepared to serve our State or Nation in a variety of military specialties. Rhode Island has citizen soldiers qualified in military occupational specialties which include Artillery, Infantry, Signal, Engineer, Aviation, and Military Police.

During FY99, Rhode Island Army National Guard units participated in Annual Training sites throughout the United States and in Germany, Canada, Oman and Kuwait. The 103rd Field Artillery Brigade Headquarters participated in a Warfighter Exercise with the III Corps at Fort Hood, TX. The 1st Battalion of the 103rd Field Artillery conducted Initial Fire Support Automated System live-fire mission training at Fort Pickett, VA. An element of Detachment 2, 3rd Battalion, 172rd Infantry Company underwent intensive Mountain Warfare training at Valcartier, Canada. Another element participated in a SETAF exercise at the Combat Maneuver Training Center in Germany.

During FY99, the Drug Demand Reduction Program sponsored 67 activities that promoted drug education and awareness of illicit drugs. The program utilized 150 volunteers and reached approximately 148,500 children, young adults and the general public via local newspaper coverage, community schools, civic organizations and National Guard programs. The partnership with city police departments provided personnel and equipment to support programs and events such as DARE, National Night Out, Camp Wave and Safety Day. Youth programs such as Child Opportunity Zone, ACE Camp, Boy Scouts of America and YMCA Kid’s Day were all part of this year’s activities.

I received the following from a source I consider trustworthy:

Phil,

As forwarded:

Veracity: Unknown.

(Seems Legit ... IMHO)

Sure raised the old heart rate this early Sat. AM though!

"Just another reason why..." (Remember that saying from RVN days?)

The citizen in me wants say he has a "right to free speech," however abhorrent. The Marine/Veteran in me just wants to "dust" his sorry ass!

I have a good idea which would win out if any of us crossed paths with this puke ... Anyone know a good defense lawyer?

Perhaps contacting the Board of Regents AND every affiliated Alumni Association would cause him to temper his rhetoric. Doubt it. Putting a dent in contributions will probably have a better shot to affect policy more than emailing the President, who'll just hit "delete," though.

Maybe there are ROTC units there to be contacted too. I'll send it to my local newspaper contacts here in NE Ohio as well to check it out as to legitimacy.

S/F-

Rick

I have a daughter at the US Air Force Academy who forwarded me the following email. It involves a polite inquiry made by a cadet, regarding how to best promote the Academy's upcoming forum on Political Science issues. The cadet contacted Peter Kirstein, a so-called "professor" of History at Saint Xavier University, and you won't (freakin) believe the response.

The paragraph below is Kirstein's reply followed by the cadet's original email inquiry. Below that is *CONTACT INFORMATION* for "Professor" Kirstein. Please use it, perhaps not to contact Kirstein himself but to contact his EMPLOYER instead. Let's get fools like this out of our Universities. On Monday, I'm writing to the Chancellor, Dean or whomever is most likely to FIRE this imbecile. Please join me.

You are a disgrace to this country and I am furious you would even think I would support you and your aggressive baby killing tactics of collateral damage. Help you recruit. Who, top guns to reign death and destruction upon nonwhite peoples throughout the world? Are you serious sir? Resign your commission and serve your country with honour.

No war, no air force cowards who bomb countries without AAA, without possibility of retaliation. You are worse than the snipers. You are imperialists who are turning the whole damn world against us. September 11 can be blamed in part for what you and your cohorts have done to the Palestinians, the VC, the Serbs, a retreating army at Basra.

You are unworthy of my support.

Dear Sir or Ma'am
The Air Force Academy is going to be having our annual
Academy Assembly. This is a forum for mainly but not only Political Science majors, discussing very important issues dealing with politics.

Right now we are in the planning stage for advertising and we would appreciate your help in the follow areas. Do you know of or have any methods or ways for interschool advertising and or communications? What would be the best way for us to advertise at your school whether it is
sending you the fliers and you making copies or by perhaps putting an advertisement in your local publication? We would appreciate your input and the cost of what you recommend. Thank you for your time and consideration

Very Respectfully
Cadet: Robert Kurpiel

Is Saint Xavier University a private Catholic school? If so, start putting emails towards the Catholic church. If they aren't going to stop child molestors at the freaking VAtican, they sure as hell better get off their ass and start paying attention to this. If it is a public school, I would suggest emailing the administration and telling them that you don't appreciate what monies in this country are being spent for.
