The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home
.
. .
.
A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

.
.
If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.
.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae

CASUAL SATURDAY AT THE CANTEEN
Liberty commences at the beginning of today's FReeper USO Canteen thread and, depending on your division assignment, expires when the new thread for Sunday is posted.
***** A special invitation to our troops and Veterans to join us in today's cyber trip. *****

Rhode Island
The compact state of Rhode Island
is most recognizable for its 400
miles of shoreline, which has
resulted in the nickname

Historic Wickford Village,

Historic Wickford is the
original town center of
North Kingstown, Rhode Island,
and it is a place where time
seems to have stopped in the 1820s
Wickford's most famous native
is the renowned novelist, John
Updike, a descendant of one of
the village's founders, and it is
generally agreed that Wickford
provides the setting for his popular
novel, "The Witches of Eastwick".
(The movie that was based on the
book, however, was not made in Wickford.)

The bustling harbor glistens as
elegant yachts, luxury liners and
lobster boats compete for space.
All of these combined are the
charm that is Newport.
Founded in 1639, Newport's
first residents were settlers
seeking religious freedom.
The area was soon recognized
for its ideal trade location and
quickly developed into one of
the major seaports on the east
coast. Beautiful schooners and
trade ships billowed into the
harbor, crowding the wooden
docks and bringing exotic treasures.

This is America's big one: Since 1954, Newport has

Did you like it because it was very "unbecoming"?? LOL! Well, it shows the desperation that her campaign must be experiencing. Pathetic!

I enjoy reading these but can't remember responding until now. This one brought back memories. Ah, Rhode Island. Every SWO gets to know the Newport Naval Base, usually twice. First time is for Surface Warfare Officers School for about three months. You're new enough and eager enough that SWO school is actually fun. Then, if you stay in, six months spent at Department Head School at the Newport Naval Base. Six months of academic hell in the middle of some of the loveliest real estate and the nicest people in the world. Both times I left there on orders back to Charleston, S.C. with a lot of fond memories. The second time I left with the phone number of the future Mrs. Non-Sequitur. Thanks for the memories, Snow Bunny.

No kidding!!
(In the sweetest voice ever known to man) Um, Aeronaut!! Would you let me fly? Pretty please? I haven't crashed in two whole days. I do stay alert (except for that one time when I crashed Ma's car, but no big deal) and I try to listen as best as possible. Please?? Please??

I wrote John and I meant Pat in my FReep.
Some of that stuff belongs in the john. You see how my brain works? LoL!
Off to work later all. Have a great day.
Oh, and by the way, Newport R.I. is a very nice place to visit. I am only an hour or so away from there. When it is hot and humid here, that is the place to be. Nice to know that in early November. I'll remind you all again in June next year!
I owe I owe!

Good morning from VA Beach!
Got a quick question for everyone: I need to find a FREE place online where I can store my images to post here at FreeRepublic and other sites. I wouldn't need more than 10MB and FTP access is a major plus. The site I was using is shutting down on Dec 3rd and I need a place to store my stuff. Please freepmail me with your suggestions. Thanks! Have a great day everyone!
