IRS May Cut 1,800 Jobs in Holtsville

The Internal Revenue Service so far has failed to find other jobs for many of the 2,700 employees in its Holtsville facility whose positions will be eliminated after next year, union officials said yesterday.

This has prompted the agency to look at trimming 1,100 to 1,800 full-time and seasonal jobs in the facility, agency and union officials said.

Despite promises in the spring that the IRS would try to avoid layoffs at its Holtsville facility, officials now say they will vacate the first floor of their main building - a workspace for about 2,500 people. The agency also has begun negotiating potential layoffs with the National Treasury Employees Union.
