Officials with the Travis County Republican Party say there's something rotten at the early voting polls this year. And they say they've got affidavits to prove it.
Alan Sager, chairman of the party, said that at least twice while demonstrating the new eSlate voting system, election clerks turned the dial so that it stopped on a ballot for a straight-Democratic vote.
"We've had five or eight different people say that Democratic clerks showed them how to run the system and vote straight Democrat," Sager said Thursday.
In one instance, Sager said, two people who wanted to vote for a Republican candidate were instructed during the demonstration to cast the ballot for the straight Democratic ticket and unwittingly did.
According to affidavits, relatives of the two voters were not allowed to assist the pair during the incident at H-E-B at 7th Street and Pleasant Valley Road. Sager said he will give their testimony to the Travis County district attorney today.
Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir, a Democrat, said she had not seen the affidavits but said her office investigates any irregularity reported to them.
"Even if I get a vague rumor over the telephone, we do take it seriously," DeBeauvoir said. "Every time Alan has told me some vague rumor, I send out a notice to all locations."
DeBeauvoir said she's done that at least twice since early voting began.
But she said she was aware of at least one problem Sager referred to Thursday and had taken immediate corrective action.
At the Randall's grocery store in Lakeway, the election judge had failed to set up a demonstration of the eSlate system.
Marc and Beverly McCord went to cast their ballots at the store earlier this week. They say the judge reached into their booth, operated the system for them and turned the dial to a straight Democratic ticket.
After Marc McCord made a mistake, the judge came over and "reached in again and dialed up the straight Democratic ticket again and said, 'Now hit enter,' " McCord said. "He sat there and watched while I dialed up my votes. I found out in comparing with my wife that he had done the same thing for her."
DeBeauvoir said the judge has since been told that's not how things are supposed to operate and he's corrected his procedures.
"We have since talked with that judge and said, 'What were you thinking?' " DeBeauvoir said. "We have since instructed him, 'Do not go in the booth with the voters.' He insists he never told anybody which party to vote."
The irony, DeBeauvoir said, is that the judge happens to be a Republican.

To report fraud
The U.S. attorney's office and the FBI are asking that any allegations of fraud on Election Day, including voter bribery, voter intimidation and ballot forgery, be reported directly to either agency.
To report a violation, the public can call the FBI 24 hours a day at (210) 225-6741. During business hours, they can contact the U.S. attorney's Austin office at 916-5858.
I agree, and it will get worse and worse, unless we can come up with a nationwide system of checking peoples ID's and where they voted.
We need to hire a big bank - they keep track of transactions from anywhere immediatly!!
"We're asking concerned citizens to call (703) 836-8602 or email us at voterfraud@conservative.org to report any observed instances of voter fraud, illegal get-out-the-vote activities, or election officials not properly checking voter identifications," added Keene.
My report documented this irregularity, but I was told this kind of thing happens all the time. No action was taken.
What blows me away is that people don't know how to operate the equipment. I have never seen a voting system that was not self explanatory. I have used punch cards, voting machines and optical scan ballots.
Tuesday, I will use punch cards again. I will have to take some chads now that I know what to call them.
I agree with you to an extent. But, this statement here also gives me something else to ponder.
I have also thought that there is a Demorat element that has infiltrated the local Republican party apparatus to guarantee a ineffective general election candidate through the subversion of our primary elections. I have worked for a U.S. House candidate who lost the primary last election cycle to the current Republican nominee. This nominee lost in a landslide last time, but is the party nominee yet again.
My friend and candidate was a Captain in the U.S. Army and much more qualified to run against Mr. Farrce the traitor. Even if we lost the general election, we would have damaged Farr enough to pave the way for another Republican to oust this seditious pig.
I often wonder how this keeps occurring and why these candidates even bother to run because they are guaranteed to lose every time. These perennial candidates do us no favors and refuse to consider that they are responsible for a Demorat being elected.
In addition, I never see any debates or public discourse by local Republican nominees challenging the Demorats. Few of them actually campaign at all. It would be better to not run a candidate at all. People would begin to wonder...
For many years the Republican Party was against being able to do so. When we started to win elections that changed and now we are for it. I was there when my SREC Rep had the conversion and said " we got 14,000 straight party votes in Ft Bend this time and need to keep it."

I know who you are talking about. He (and especially his wife) have done more to alienate support than develop it. The good news is that this time they are done.
You may wish to contact the Leadership Institute, the ACU, or the RLC. All will help you identify, recruit, develop, and fund better candidates.
And who is the Secretary of State that will certify the election results? Floyd the Barber?
Now there's an odd statement. There were no Republicans given the party had not been founded. There were several Mexicans and they flew the Mexican flag with 1824 printed in the middle, demanding a return to the last constitution. Also most of those who fought and survived the war and later joined the US were Democrats.
There is a California State Assembly candidate that fits this description.
While I like Dr. Stanley Monteith, it seems there is a cult of personality surrounding him that continues to hurt any Republican chance of getting a viable party nominee. This is mainly because of the Santa Cruz block of primary voters. I saw this first hand at the Lincoln Day Dinners. It is such a curious phenomena and leads me to wonder if it is not somehow engineered partly by the Enemy...
NO he is NOT wrong. There is no Party registration in Texas. That stamp only prevents you from voting in the other primary or a runoff of another party that same year. You will get a new, clean card before another primary and may vote in another parties primary then.
I just love when people tell you, that your wrong when they have no idea what they are talking about.
