This week's winner is Nevada's Lander County Sheriff Michael Kranovich. He was found guilty of embezzling asset forfeiture funds given to the county by the federal government in federal court in Reno on October 25. He is not seeking re-election to a second term, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.
Sheriff Kranovich was convicted of taking $12,000 and $5,000 from the asset forfeiture fund after failing to adequately explain where the money had gone. At one point, he told KOLO-TV in Reno that some of the cash might have been thrown away when he cleaned his desk.
Kranovich faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count, plus restitution, but remains free on his own recognizance until his February 10 sentencing. No word on whether he's still the sheriff.
About as believable as the arguments of the Drug War Goons around here.
Right up there with the old Steve Martin line "I forgot armed robbery was illegal"
Word of advice to cops in our War on (some) Drugs: Grab the cash before it is entered into evidence or the account books.
Good: Put contents of suspected druggie's wallet into your pocket while frisking him.
Bad: Take money the feds sent you after they confiscated it from the suspect and put it in your pocket (or trash can).
< /sarcasm>
The actual info comes from the Review, the link goes to the site that publishes the newsletter I found it in.
They're anti-WOD, not 'pro-drug', whatever that might mean.
A little hard to find since the story didn't rate it's own headline and was lumped in under "News Wrap".
