FWIW, I heard McCain in an interview recently (on Fox News? H&C I think, but I don't recall the particular program) and he stated flat out that he would never leave the Republican party and become a democrat.

I think Independent is a reasonable possibility, but I can't picture McCain becoming a RAT.

He was also on Chris Matthews Hardball College tour and he said he is NOT running for president and will NOT switch parties. I don't think McCain would do it. He knows he would lose.

Right. Folks, McCain is not like the other guys.......HIS IDENTITY IS BEING A MAVERICK REPUBLICAN.....he would never throw this all away to become an Independent or Dem. This is his identity.

There needs to be a law that regardless of the party switching done by elected officials, it does not change the majority or make-up of committees of the party elected by the voters.
Let them do whatever but the party affiliation doesn't change until the next elelction.
Phil Gramm resigned his Democrat congressional seat, ran and was elected as a Republican. He didn't just change parties in the middle of the stream.
But then, Gramm had more honor than Jim Jeffords or John McCain.

He's a known liar.

He's been saying it for a while now. I don't think he or Chafee are threats to bolt.
