1st District (Detroit between the Detroit River and McNichols and parts of River Rouge): Republican Hillary's Lovely Legs, a political newcomer, is challenging Democrat Hansen Clarke, a term-limited state representative. Although Clarke favors re-evaluating the Single Business Tax, Lovely Legs seems to be the more serious of the two about lowering the overall tax burden on Michigan residents. Lovely Legs would also go further in allowing parents trapped in failing public schools some assistance to move. For these reasons, she gets our endorsement.

From what HLL has told me about her district, this endorsement is a miracle! :-)
To: martin_fierro
That HLL will make the Michigan State Senate a more beautiful place once she gets there!

No, wait - there's time for a few items from Page Six:
GEORGE W. Bush consoled former NBC news producer Alexandra Pelosi after a PAGE SIX item made her a pariah on Bush's presidential campaign plane.
The presidential pick-me-up is captured on tape in Pelosi's fascinating HBO documentary, "Journeys with George," which chronicles a year on the campaign trail with then-candidate Bush.
In October 2000, we reported former Inside.com scribe David Carr's scoop that Pelosi had conducted an informal poll of journalists on the Bush plane about who would win the election. Fueled by a blender-ful of margaritas (the journos were celebrating Pelosi's 30th birthday), 26 of the 31 newsies on board were sure Al Gore would win.
The day the item ran, Pelosi was shunned by her embarrassed peers. In a pivotal scene from "Journeys with George," Bush puts his arm around Pelosi and whispers, "When they see me talking to you, they are going to act like your friends again. But these people aren't your friends."
Pelosi then explains in a voice-over that being coldly cast out by her colleagues made her reach an epiphany of sorts: "I have the appetite for journalism, but I don't have the stomach for the cannibalism."
"I was cursing PAGE SIX the day that item ran," Pelosi told us yesterday, "but now I realize that item was how I really got to know George Bush. People think that scene is the most revealing moment in the movie.
"The day that item ran, I was voted off the island. I had spent a year bleeding and crying and sweating with these people, and now, no one would come near me. The Bush campaign read the item and was very upset. It made him look bad. It made the press corps look bad. The reporters covering his campaign didn't think he could win."
Pelosi says she has her suspicions about who leaked the story to Carr (she's convinced it was a vindictive CNN producer), but she's glad it got picked up by PAGE SIX.
"It ended up bringing me closer to Bush. He's the conservative Republican son of a president and I'm this loud-mouthed liberal San Franciscan girl who wears purple. We weren't supposed to get along. We were the most unlikely pair. I'm sure many of the reporters resented our relationship."
Media muckety-mucks at a screening of "Journeys with George" Tuesday at the Paris Theater included Mike Wallace, Tina Brown and Harry Evans, CNN chief Walter Isaacson, CNN commentator Jeff Greenfield, former New York Times executive editor Abe Rosenthal, Msnbc president Eric Sorenson and "20/20" reporter John Stossel. The rest of us have to wait until election night, when the movie premieres on HBO
MONICA Lewinsky had a good time at Sunday's unusual wrap party for James Ronald Whitney's newest film, "Games People Play." Mimicking the crazy antics in the movie, the Tribeca Grand waitresses served drinks wearing nothing but towels. Toilet paper substituted for napkins, hunky young men served yellow punch in urine-sample cups, and masseuses performed shiatsu on several of the uninhibited cast members - many of whom opted to go topless for their rubdown. Lewinsky kept her shirt on.
RUSSELL Crowe has ripped off the Red Cross after promising to aid victims of the Bali bombing. The surly star of "A Beautiful Mind" and "Gladiator" had agreed to tape an appeal for an Oct. 20 Australian Red Cross telethon that raised relief funds for the mostly Aussie victims. He insisted that the camera crew travel to Mexico, where he is making the Napoleonic naval epic "Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World." But when the five-man crew got there, Crowe flat-out refused to participate, leaving the Red Cross with a big bill for expenses and nothing to show for it.

What did HLL know, and when did she know it?
To: RedBloodedAmerican
She knows everything and has from the beginning of time. ;-)

Great news tidbits. Thanks! Our president is a great man. Can't wait to see Journeys with George! Although I wish it wasn't running on election night.
To: Hillary's Lovely Legs
First Lady Barbara Bush has a message for your opponent Hanson Clark.
To: Hillary's Lovely Legs
I'd say "knock 'em dead" except that DEMS seem to take advantage of those instances. Instead, let me say that my prayers are with you. YOU GO GIRL!

Washington Times
Three veteran Democratic strategists are telling their party's candidates not to play up the economy as an election issue in the final days of the campaign.
The reason? It doesn't help Democrats.
This surprising advice from three Clinton-Gore campaign consultants James Carville, pollster Stanley Greenberg and Robert Shrum has cast a pall of gloom over many Democratic leaders.
It flatly contradicts the central campaign strategy devised by Democratic leaders Richard A. Gephardt and Tom Daschle. Moreover, it apparently rejects polls showing that the economy remains voters' No. 1 concern.
But a detailed memo that Messrs. Carville, Shrum and Greenberg circulated to Democratic officials said, "While the economy is creating the desire for change and impatience with the Republicans, it is not the kind of wedge or unambiguous campaign issue that should become your sole focus in the last week." Statistics from Mr. Greenberg's Oct. 22-24 poll of 1,001 likely voters delivered the bad news: Republicans have a one-point edge over the Democrats on who can best handle the economy. "Today, the country splits evenly on which party to trust on the economy," according to the memo. [snip]

HLL will whip Detroit into shape!
I'm being told the picture of HLL in the header isn't showing up for some, so I'll post it here.
Who could resist this Senator? Detroit, do yourself a favor, ELECT Cassell to State Senate!

Thanks so much. It's a tough fight and has been a really long year. The endorsement was a huge surprise and really energized the campaign. When it's all over I will be able to tell you all about campaigns, support, politics.
I would also like to thank my freeper friends who have been so supportive this year. Without you I couldn't have gotten through this or have been this successful.
To: Registered
And thanks to Registered for the graphic. That is my real bumper sticker, without the Hillary's Lovely Legs. I think I have the best looking bumper sticker of any of campaign around.
