Poll shows Collins, Baldacci with significant leads
PORTLAND (AP) -- A statewide telephone poll released Monday indicates that Republican Susan Collins and Democrat John Baldacci hold significant leads in their respective races for U.S. senate and governor.
The poll conducted by Strategic Marketing Services shows 55.2 percent of those surveyed support or are leaning toward incumbent Collins, compared with 36 percent for Democrat Chellie Pingree.
Baldacci had 50 percent, compared to 29 percent for Republican Peter Cianchette, 6.2 percent for Green independent Jonathan Carter and 3.4 percent for independent John Michael.
Democrat Tom Allen led the 1st District congressional race with 60.4 percent, compared with Republican Steven Joyce's 29.2 percent.
The closest race was in the 2nd District, where Democrat Michael Michaud had 47.5 percent and Republican Kevin Raye had 37.9 percent.
The poll of 500 randomly selected registered voters who plan to cast ballots next Tuesday was conducted between Oct. 24 and 27. It claims a margin of error of 4.4 percent in the statewide races, 6.1 percent in the 1st District race and 6.3 percent in the 2nd District race.
