In about one week, Wisconsin voters will pick the state's next governor, and the latest numbers show a tight race between the two main party candidates.
A new poll by UW-Milwaukee's Center for Urban Initiatives and Research shows Jim Doyle's lead over Gov. McCallum has shrunk.
Of the 505 resident surveyed by telephone last week, 38-percent said they'd vote for Doyle. While 36-percent said they'd vote for McCallum.
A UW-Milwaukee poll conducted in August, had Doyle leading the governor by 15-percentage points.
Eight percent of those polled in the most recent survey said they'd vote for Libertarian Ed Thompson, and 16 were undecided.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus five percentage points when based on the 418 likely voters.

That's "McCallum" in the headline.
The poll gives us Wisconsinites a ray of hope.

Doyle is as sleazy as they come. If elected , he will spend his whole term granting the wishes of all those he cut deals with.

Doyle's sinking like a rock. If he doesn't win, he'll soon be swimming with the fishes out in Lake Michigan.

Doyle is the ultimate gun-grabber in a state with over 1 million hunters. This election shouldn't even be close, but it is.
To: Senator_Blutarski
What's wrong with the gun owners? Do they understand what's at stake? Do they vote?

nice 1/4 page ad in the urinal sentinel this morning from a gun group with the headlines of LIAR and a picture of Doyle. They then proceeded to list the laws that doyle will try to use to take the guns away. very effective. rob

The Green Bay Press-Gazette endorsed McCallum over the weekend (after this poll was taken) so that should help him as well.
An added benefit for all of us Wiscosinites should McCallum pull this thing out is that Doyle will be gone as Attorney General as well!!
Now if we could only do something about our senators (Feingold and Kohl).

Rob, that ad needs to run every day until the election. Doyle is a snake. No self-respecting hunter, gun-owner or 2nd Amendment advocate should cast a vote for Doyle.
Over the past 18 months the press has done a number on McCallum. He has done a nice job of recovering.
I wish we could get the press to stop equating the Chavla issues (extortion, bribery) with the Jensen issues (use of staff for campaigns).
Where was Doyle as AG over the last decade while Chavla was collecting his extortion and bribes?
To: BlueMondaySkipper
Doyle did nothing as AG - he'd make Janet Reno look like Robert Kennedy - except join in the tobacco
settlement shakedown at the last minute and pick on Mrs Cleo.
He's your typical snake-in-the-grass anti-gun DemonRat who'll say anything and do anything just to obtain power. Wisconsin Rat voters are stupid to pick him over the more respectable Tom Barrett - IMO he was the only Rat who had the best shot at beating McCallum.
But hey - who's complaining?
To: BlueMondaySkipper
I got a letter today from Russ Feingold in response to my outrage over his and Herb Kohl's vote against Justice Owen. The letter said she was "not qualified" in Russ' mind. The letter as implies that the Democrats are justified in blocking Republican nominees because they "blocked so many of President Clinton's nominees".
Feingold has been whipped into submission by the Democratic Party. Kohl is a follower. They represent the State of Wisconsin poorly.

Eight percent of those polled in the most recent survey said they'd vote for Libertarian Ed Thompson Sour grapes from Tommy's little brother, who's only running because his tavern was raided for illegal gambling machines.
A vote for Ed Thompson is clearly a vote for Doyle. Give McCallum a full term and he'll solve most of Wisconsin woes, which were caused by the Rats in the legislature anyway.
To: navigator
Doyle yesterday just started passing out checks from the Publishers Clearinghouse Lawsuit, Could'nt he have passed them out earlier in the year!! Sounds like an election ploy, almost like buying votes, Eh. Demonrats are the sleaziest scum out there (sorry no disrespect to scum)
To: BlkConserv
I agree, Ed would be better off running for the state senate or for the assembly.
He's pro-abortion also, which is one of the reasons why I withdrew my support of him.

A lot of people I've talked to said that they're leaving Wisconsin ASAP if Doyle gets elected.
Property and income taxes will shoot through the roof if Doyle is elected. More businesses will leave in droves - and so will hard-working taxpayers and gun-owners like myself.
I'm currently a Thompson supporter but I may have to hold my nose and vote for McCallum. Other than keeping a chair warm for the years leading up to Tommy accepting the HHS post, what has McCallum done?
To: BlueMondaySkipper
Wiscosinites(sic) Misspellationious greetings to you bro. McCullum for Guv. of Wiscosin!
As for Feingold, I can remember when HE was referred to as the ONLY honest liberal left in the Senate. Of course he still is, because Wellstone is dead.
To: Extremely Extreme Extremist
Other than keeping a chair warm for the years leading up to Tommy accepting the HHS post, what has McCallum done? McCallum has done a lot since he took over the governor post.
Being the Lt Gov of Tommy is sort of like Bush I being VP under Reagan. There isn't a whole lot to do other than give speeches and shore up support of the boss' plans.
