Oklahoman Editorial: For Tom Cole (Oklahoma 4th District seat of J.C. Watts, Jr.)
2002-10-28
Seldom has Oklahoma had a chance to send a more ready-made congressman to Washington than Tom Cole. With a wealth of political experience and contacts, Cole would hardly be a neophyte in the House if voters in the 4th Congressional District elect him.
We hope they do, not just for the district that encompasses much of south central Oklahoma, but for all of the state. Cole would have an immediate impact in Congress, as a well-respected successor to the retiring Rep. J.C. Watts.
Cole's resume is long and impressive. He served in the state Legislature, was a national executive with the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Republican National Committee, and has, as a consultant, directed campaigns that have helped Republicans capture most of the major offices in Oklahoma. At one time he was consultant for four of the six House members from Oklahoma, including Watts and Steve Largent, now running for governor.
His work on a national level means that he personally knows more than 150 members of the 435-member House, including Speaker Denny Hastert. Cole also has access to the White House and other key players throughout the Bush administration. That's impressive stuff, by which his district -- and all of Oklahoma -- can only benefit.
The district's lines have been redrawn, taking in much of the Interstate 35 corridor from Norman south to the Red River. While it is solidly Democratic in registration, the district is a conservative one; more than 60 percent of district residents voted for George W. Bush in 2000.
Cole says the district deserves a congressman who would support the president most of the time, and he's right. In a time of war it's especially important in a district that includes Tinker Air Force Base and Fort Sill.
Cole's opponent, Democrat Darryl Roberts, is a seasoned politician and former Marine who embarrassed himself last week with spurious claims that Cole dodged the military draft while in college. Roberts' stunt appeared to us to be an act of desperation from a man who has run twice before for Congress, but hasn't come close to winning.
Not the case with Cole. If elected he would be an effective congressman for a generally conservative district. In Tom Cole, voters in the 4th District have a real opportunity to elect experience, right from the start.

This editorial endorsement is one of the best that I have ever read. Note the bolded area. The Oklahoman told it like it is!

We are ahead in the polls and it looks good.
This district is heavily registered DemocRAT in the Southern counties they redistricted into the 4th, however, Tom's family all comes from down there and he is also a Chickasaw Indian. In the past the Chickasaw's have voted mostly DemocRAT but in this election for Congress they are voting Republican.
And our district, including the new counties, went heavily for Bush. It is a very conservative district and if I were guessing a lot of DemocRATs have been voting Republican, but have not reregistered as Republicans.

Good luck on keeping it that way. We have been inundated with illegals who somehow seem to worm their way into the electoral process and greedy geezers from CA who don't understand why CA became too expensive for them to begin with!

Used to live in Yucaipa in the 80's before the huge influx of illegals and when being Republican was popular even if the Hollywood left still hated us even back then!

I was born in Loma Linda, raised in Lake Elsinore, went to high school in Coronado, joined the Navy in '47 at San Bernardino, was discharged at Mare Island in '49 and lived in the SF Bay Area until '90, when we moved to Eugene, OR... :o)
California really went to the dogs and Oregon could soon follow, if we don't elect Republicans and vote no, on some of these off the wall propositions !!
