Gas Russians Used Was Opium Derivative, U.S. Officials Say
 Printable version

WASHINGTON -- The mysterious gas Russian forces pumped into a theater to end a hostage crisis was an opiate -- a chemical related to morphine, Pentagon officials said Monday.

The Bush administration, meanwhile, refused to criticize Russian special forces for using the gas, which killed 116 of the hostages as well as the hostage takers.

"The president abhors the loss of life, but he understands that it is the terrorists" who are responsible for the tragedy, Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer said Monday as the president traveled to New Mexico.

Military officials said the U.S. embassy in Moscow had determined that the gas used by the Russians was some sort of opium derivative. Such substances not only kill pain and dull the senses but also can cause coma and death by shutting down breathing and circulation.

Russian authorities have refused to name the substance used, even keeping that information from doctors treating the rescued hostages.

Fleischer did not endorse the tactic in remarks to reporters as Bush flew from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to Phoenix, then from Arizona to New Mexico. But he made clear the administration's view that blame for the deaths lay with the captors.

Asked directly about the use of the gas, Fleischer wouldn't say whether the administration believed it was appropriate. "We don't know what all the facts are," he said.

But, he said, "As that information is developed, the president feels very strongly that the people who caused this are the terrorists."

Bush had not spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin as of Sunday evening, Fleischer said.

Fleischer said the United States still is unsure how many Americans were involved in the siege but blamed that on the difficulty of keeping track of traveling Americans and not on the Russian government.

The measured White House reaction comes as Bush seeks Russia's support for a tough resolution in the United Nations on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.

In Moscow, a U.S. consular officer visited an American survivor of the theater hostage crisis, a State Department official said.

The identity of the female patient was not released for privacy reasons, the official said. Although she was hospitalized, the official said she was not injured.

"We are still continuing to determine the whereabouts of possibly one or two other Americans," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Russian special forces troopers ended the 21/2-day takeover before dawn Saturday with a raid on the theater shortly before the hostage-takers, rebels from Russia's embattled Chechnya region, had threatened to begin killing their more than 800 captives.

The Moscow Health Department said 405 former hostages, including nine children, remained hospitalized Monday after 239 were released. At least 45 remained in grave condition Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matviyenko said Monday.

All but two of the 118 hostages known to be dead were killed by the gas, not their captors. The 50 Chechen rebels holding the hostages also were killed, either by the gas or by gunshots as security services stormed the theater. (AP)

Wouldn't a shot of Narcan have saved some?

Narcan would have saved all of them. If the gas used was indeed an opiate, you can bet your life that the storm troopers were juiced up on Narcan before they went in.

There wasn't any time to help the hostages with Narcan. The spetsnaz were too busy staging pictures of Chechnyans next to cognac bottles and women with bombs strapped around their waists.

Although its tragic that 100+ died, anyone who blames the Russians is totally ignorant of the way that Chechnyan jihadists treat their hostages.

Not so long ago, we were talking on FR about the Chechnyan snuff flicks being sold in American Islamic mosques, not to mention on jihadist Web sites. These videotaped murders and killings are favorite fare of the Islamist psychopath (of which there are all too many, inspired by their Satanic moon god).

These "rebels" were set to inflict death upon 750 innocent people. No doubt they had a few videocams on scene for the planned slaughter.

The Russians did the right and the best thing possible under the circumstances.

I'd forgotten about those videos. Terrorists have proven that they are savages who don't care whether they live or die. In my book, that fact provides the answer; they don't care then we don't.

Putin beat the "rebels" to it. And we already know they took pictures.

They were doing their best to get them out afterwards, and I think the casualty count is minimal considering what it could have been. I'm sure locating and deactivating the explosives was high priority too.

Don't get me wrong, I think they did a great job under the given circumstances. It could have easily gone the other direction.

Amazing the things the Russians can do with a little opium.

(Not to mention the fruits of their terrorist internationale ... how dramatic was this latest bid to be on "Our Side" in the War Against Terror.)

What a win:win:win ... scooping up accolades from the Israelis for their "winning" experimentation with the gas, cementing our partnership in the War Against Terror and bringing the Chechens to the table to boot.

Probably about time to swing Mozdok's sights to the south anyway.

Check this out:

German survivors provide clue to deadly theatre gas

DOCTORS who are treating two German survivors of the Moscow theatre siege believe that they may have identified the gas used by Russian special forces.

After examining an 18-year-old woman student and a 43-year-old businessman who were knocked out by the powerful drug, experts at a clinic in Munich believe that a narcotic called fentanyl could have killed the 115 hostages.

The drug is often found in powerful pain-killing body patches used by cancer sufferers. It is also sought by heroin addicts as it is an opiate similar to morphine and is very strong in its pure state.

Experts at the Pentagon said yesterday that they also strongly suspected that an opium-based drug had been used, but would not say if American doctors had tested any of the survivors.

Thomas Zilker, a toxicology expert at the specialist German clinic, ruled out a nerve gas, as it would have left traces in the victims’ bodies, which he had been unable to find. He said that the gas was probably something that the Russians had developed for themselves, but he was having difficulty finding information because of Russian “mystery-mongering”.

Russian officials were maintaining their mystery last night, although a top aide of President Putin insisted that the purpose of the raid “was not to kill everyone, and so the use of sarin or any other poison gas can be ruled out”. Viktor Fominykh, the Russian presidency’s top medical official, added: “Consequently it is not essential to know its composition exactly in order to provide treatment.”

Bombarded by questions, Dr Fominykh admitted that not even he had been told the precise composition of the gas pumped into the auditorium.

The Russians were reluctant to allow foreign embassies to airlift the injured, to prevent independent examinations, but Professor Zilker and his team at the Munich Klinikum Rechts Der Isar said it was “strongly indicated” that the two German survivors had consumed an unknown quantity of a synthetic narcotic with chlorinated hydrocarbons, including fentanyl.

He said that there was a very fine line between an appropriate dose of an anaesthetic and a potentially fatal overdose leading to suffocation. “You wouldn’t really have the opportunity to regulate the dosage in such a large theatre,” he said. It was possible that so much gas had been pumped into the theatre that there had not been enough oxygen.

Andy Oppenheimer, a nuclear and biological weapons expert with Janes Defence Weekly, said that fentanyl was an anaesthetic and was used as an alternative to morphine, but had never been used as a chemical weapon before. He said it was “very likely” that the Russians were reluctant to reveal the type of substance used because it would alert the US to their experimentation with it as a chemical weapon.

“These have not been outlawed by the Convention on Chemical Weapons,” he said. “There are grey areas in the way these gases can be used and the Russians may be exploiting this to be able to develop chemical weapons without contravening international law. The symptoms caused by fentanyl in this context would have been vomiting, disorientation and a collapse of the respiratory system.”

Fentanyl was first synthesised in Belgium in the late 1950s and has been used in clinical practice since the 1960s. It is an exceptionally potent analgesic for use in heart surgery.

Illegal use of the drug first appeared in the mid-1970s among the medical profession and quickly spread to other drug-users. Its biological effect is indistinguishable from that of heroin, with the exception that it may be hundreds of times more potent.

Doctors in Moscow say they are treating the former hostages with naxalone, a product used for the treatment of secondary respiratory ailments.

The only thing I wonder about was that traffic jam of ambulances that we were seeing afterwards. I can't help but wonder that maybe a little more could have been done to get those in and out of the area a little quicker. Then again, I'm sure that they were all doing about the best they could under the circumstances.

Posted this on another thread.

-quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB, BZ)

The chemical warfare agent 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB, BZ) is an anticholinergic agent that affects both the peripheral and central nervous systems (CNS).

It is one of the most potent anticholinergic psychomimetics known, with only small doses necessary to produce incapacitation. It is classified as a hallucinogenic chemical warfare agent. QNB usually is disseminated as an aerosol, and the primary route of absorption is through the respiratory system. Absorption also can occur through the skin or gastrointestinal tract. It is odorless. QNB's pharmacologic activity is similar to other anticholinergic drugs (eg, atropine) but with a much longer duration of action.

Pathophysiology:

QNB acts by competitively inhibiting muscarinic receptors. Muscarinic receptors primarily are associated with the parasympathetic nervous system, which innervates numerous organ systems, including the eye, heart, respiratory system, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and bladder.

Sweat glands, innervated by the sympathetic nervous system, also are modulated by muscarinic receptors. The ICt50 (concentration in air of QNB necessary to incapacitate 50% of exposed and unprotected individuals through inhalation during a set time) has been reported to be 100 mg·min/m3.

Effects of QNB by any route of exposure are slow in onset and long in duration. The onset of action is approximately 1 hour, with peak effects occurring 8 hours postexposure. Symptoms gradually subside over 2-4 days. Most of the QNB that enters the body is excreted by the kidneys, making urine the choice for detection.

History:

An event involving QNB probably would create confusion, panic, multiple seriously ill or dead victims, and a major emergency medical service, police, and/or military response.

Large numbers of casualties would overwhelm any community's emergency response.

Chaos appropriately would describe events following such an event.

In the early phases of an emergency response, the toxin's identification would be unknown, and the history would be misleading and inaccurate.

Physical examination is the key to diagnosing the causative agent.

Physical:

After exposure to QNB, the physical examination is consistent with an anticholinergic syndrome. Characteristics of the anticholinergic syndrome have long been taught using the old medical adage, "dry as a bone, blind as a bat, red as a beet, hot as a hare, and mad as a hatter."

Central nervous system

Depending on the dose and time postexposure, a number of CNS effects may manifest. Restlessness, apprehension, abnormal speech, confusion, agitation, tremor, picking movements, ataxia, stupor, and coma are described.

Hallucinations are prominent, and they may be benign, entertaining, or terrifying to the patient experiencing them. Exposed patients may have conversations with hallucinated figures, and/or they may misidentify persons they typically know well.

Simple tasks typically performed well by the exposed person may become difficult. Motor coordination, perception, cognition, and new memory formation are altered as CNS muscarinic receptors are inhibited.

Peripheral nervous system

Eye: Mydriasis resulting in photophobia is expected. Impairment of near vision occurs because of loss of accommodation and reduced depth of field secondary to ciliary muscle paralysis and pupillary enlargement. If QNB is splashed into the eye, conjunctival injection and eye pain also occur.

Cardiovascular system: Tachycardia is a prominent feature of QNB exposure. Heart rates may be rapid but rarely exceed 150 beats per minute. Exacerbated heart rate responses to exertion also are expected. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure may show moderate elevation. A decrease in capillary tone may cause skin flushing.

Gastrointestinal: Intestinal motility slows, and secretions from the stomach, pancreas, and gallbladder decrease. Nausea and vomiting may occur. Decreased or absent bowel sounds are noted on examination.

Respiratory: All glandular cells become inhibited, and dry mucus membranes of the mouth and throat are noted. Speech may decrease to a whisper. Breath of the exposed patient may develop a foul odor.

Skin: Inhibition of sweating results in dry skin. Place hands directly into the axilla of the exposed patient and note the absence of moisture. Red flushed skin also may occur.

Urinary: Urination is difficult or impossible. Subsequent urinary retention may occur, and an enlarged bladder may be palpable on examination.

Temperature: The exposed patient's temperature may become elevated from the inability to sweat and dissipate heat. In warm climates such as the desert, this may result in marked hyperthermia.

Causes:

Human QNB exposures rarely are reported. Potential causes of exposure to this agent are a laboratory accident, a terrorist event, or a military conflict --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hear some people are complaining that some of the incapacitated terrorists were executed via head-shots (the soldiers on the raid didn't want them to wake up and try to kill more people and shooting them seemed to be the most expedient method of control) which also makes sense to me.

Good - glad to hear it. A little double-tap in the noggin goes a long way!

Excerpt from American Jihad: The Terrorists Living Among Us

It took us a while to piece all this together. Going to conferences and collecting promotional material had its limits. We could attend mosque services, but much of them was in Arabic. Early on, I hooked up with a friend named Khalid Duran, and he began providing translation services for much of the written and video material. But it was slow going.

Then one day I found myself standing in a Yemeni grocery store in Brooklyn. I looked around and spotted dozens of copies of dusty videos that appeared to have something to do with commandos and rifles. I bought twenty different tapes -- much to the astonishment of the store owner. When I got them into Khalid's hands we realized we were looking at paramilitary training videos for the leaders of Islamic militant groups. One of them was put out by an organization called the Islamic Association for Palestine, in Richardson, Texas. To our horror, it showed the actual torment and forced "confessions" of Palestinian "collaborators" moments before they were executed.

Jihad in Chechnya Exclusive Section by Azzam Publications

"Jazakum Allahu khairun for providing the excellent info on this site which I started visiting in January and I haven't missed a day since then. My suggestion is that if you could provide copies of your videotapes for sale as watching them on the net can be a slow & painful process on an analog modem. The proceeds could go to supporting your site, charity the Mujahideen, whatever. I send dua everyday for the Mujahideen and thank them for waking us all up from the slumber of secularism and materialism. We know that Allah ta'aala will grant them success in this life and in the hereafter as he did to Salahuddin, Khalid Ibn Walid, Uthman dan Fodio to name a few."
[Brother AK, Sierra Leone, 21 April 2000]

Added 21 April 2000 "Assalaamu alykum honored Mujahideen, since the start of the War my life has changed. I follow and read events every single day on your website. I try and picture or visualize what conditions are like on the front-lines and what goes through the minds of the Mujahideen. What logistics are involved, food, warmth, sanitation, water, sewerage, medication, etc, etc. Is there a rotation system for the Mujahideen to rest and take breaks, are they able to contact their families, etc, etc. I can try to imagine how tough and difficult conditions must be, May ALLAH make it easy for you all and Grant you Sabr and Victory over the Russians and enemies of Islam. Be Brave and Steadfast O Mujahideen, and please be careful about infiltrators to your ranks. The Russians might be sending in spies and infiltrators to assassinate the Commanders. Please also explain what are OMON units, Spetznaz units, BMP's, Ural Trucks, BTR's, etc. It pleases my heart when I read about the Russians loosing all this military hardware. The photos and videos are the best, if possible post more photos and info of the lives of the Mujahideen. We only read about foreign Mujahideen, why not inform us more about the Chechen Mujahideen without giving too much away. Hold Fast onto the Rope of ALLAH O honored Warriors of ISLAM !!!!!!!"

From lexington@leb.net Fri, 02 Jun 2000 10:59:41 -0400
Date: Fri, 02 Jun 2000 10:59:41 -0400
From: Lexington Area Muslim Network lexington@leb.net Subject: Qoqaz.net Correspondent Martyred in Chechnya

This is the second item in a brief series on Chechnya. This item is somewhat dated but worth reading.

Qoqaz.net Correspondent Shaheed Masood Al-Benin, martyred 12 April 2000
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Masood Al-Benin: Born in France, Lived in London and Buried in Chechnya "
Masood was killed whilst injured in a Russian ambush near Shatoi.

The following article details a first hand account story of the Qoqaz correspondent Masood killed 12th April 2000. May Allah accept him from amongst the Shuhadaa.

Our dear beloved brother, Masood was a personification of the verse:

"And if you turn away (from Islam and the obedience of Allah), he will exchange you for some other people, and they will not be your likes." [Quran 48:38]

Born and brought up in France by non Muslim parents, his mother was a blue eyed native French women, his father a tall African man from Benin. Following his graduation in mechanical engineering, he traveled to London where he continued his studies with a master's degree in business studies. It was to be during his Masters degree that Allah opened his heart to Islam. He had a great keenness to learn and play an active role in Islamic related work. He used to be known for his Islamic dress, which rapidly became his trademark, even at his place of work.

Upon hearing a lecture on the importance of Jihad and subsequently meeting ex-Mujahideen veterans, Masood had become surprisingly alarmed of how the Muslims had neglected the duty of Jihad, during a period whereby Muslims were being slaughtered in large numbers across the globe. And so in a small way, he attempted to redress the balance, and made an intention to travel to Afghanistan (with his brother Mu'adh), whereby he could undergo military training.

Mu'adh recalls Masood saying:

"Every Muslim considers himself as balanced BUT the balance is set according to the Prophet (SAS), so if the Prophet (SAS) has participated in (military) Jihad 27 times in his life and we have not even done this action once. How then can we say we are balanced and that we follow the way of the prophet (SAS)?"

A week prior to Masood's departure to the land of Afghanistan, He met his brother Abu Azzam. Abu Azzam had made arrangements to travel to Chechnya via a corridor made possible due to a lull in fighting (during the 1994-1996 conflict). Soon after learning about Abu Azzam's plans, Masood and Mu'adh altered their travel arrangements to accompany Abu Azzam to the land of Chechnya. Prior to the groups' departure, Abu Azzam recalls Masood's comments with reference to the Masters degree in business studies, which he had recently completed:

"I have spent the last year or so studying business, but now I am going to commence my business career by performing business with Allah, Insha-Allah!

For Allah says in the Quran: O You who believe! Shall I guide you to a business commerce that will save you from a painful torment? That you believe in Allah and His messenger and that you strive hard and fight in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives, that will be better for you, if you but knew! [Quran 61:10-11]"

Our brother had accepted Islam for less than a year prior to the completion of his ambition to travel to fight in the way of Allah, which he realized by migrating to Chechnya. Before the brothers left for Chechnya they decided to sit together and practice the Sunnah of choosing kunya's (nicknames) for one another. The kunya Masood (meaning to be happy) was unanimously chosen for the brother as he was always seen to be making his brothers smile, even when they were in the worst of moods.

The group arrived in Chechnya as the (1994-1996) conflict was drawing to an end. Despite the end of the (1994-1996) jihad, much work remained to be completed in Chechnya - primarily in the field of Da'wa (Islamic education) and military training. After completing a number of specialized military training courses, Masood was assigned a role in the Da'wa camp which involved the use of his IT skills to setup and maintain a computer lab and to teach IT skills to the brothers.

In the ensuing few months, Masood's companion - Mu'adh decided to leave Chechnya. Shortly after, Abu Azzam and Masood also decided to return home together. Literally one hour prior to their expected departure, Sheikh Abu Umar (the Sheikh of the Foreign Mujahideen in Chechnya) learnt of Masood's anticipated departure, he came to him and advised him to remain with the brothers as his knowledge of IT was an essential commodity to the Mujahideen.

Abu Azzam comments on Masood's response:

" When Sheikh Abu Umar came to Masood and told him to stay, I can still recall Masood's face lighting up into a big smile, as he had never really wanted to return to the corrupt land of the disbelievers."

For the following years Masood remained in Chechnya, his memorization of Quran and fluency in Arabic and his Emaan increased, he had continuously played an active and vital role for the Mujahideen. Upon reaching an adequate level in spoken Arabic, Masood refused to converse with the Arab brothers in English and French. Instead he would state that English and French are languages that are primarily used by the disbelievers and have less blessing then the language of the Quran and of the inhabitants of paradise.

The fruit of his works and patience culminated in a mighty reward - His presence during the commencement of the fiercest fighting in the history of the foreign Mujahideen. After the conclusion of each military operation, Masood's duties included video editing, adding titles, etc to the footage of the operations. The videos edited by Masood are currently in circulation all over the world (Masood edited video footage can be seen on the Qoqaz websites).

Our Mujahid brother Abu Adil says about him: "Mashallah, all the brothers knew him to be an excellent brother in character, the effort he put in for the video and his conduct in battle (brothers witnessed him killing many Russians during his last operation). Alhamdullilah Allah had elevated him by bringing him from the streets of France and London to be shaheed in the land of Jihad alongside the Mujahideen and as a Mujahid."

During the Duba-Yurt operations during January-Febuary 2000; Masood had been injured in his right leg by a mortar: Due to the severity of Masood's injuries and that of four other brothers (compounded by the lack of Muslim doctors willing to go to the lands of Jihad) it was necessary to transport the brothers out of Chechnya to seek specialized medical attention. It was to be during this journey that our dear brothers including Masood had obtained that which they had yearned, sacrificed and hoped for - Martyrdom in the path of Allah. The injured brothers were transported in a truck. They consisted of Masood, two other foreign Mujahideen and two Chechens. The truck was stopped near Shatoi at a Russian checkpoint; the bribed Russian colonel that had been supervising their passage out, and two brothers were seized from the cabin. The remaining three injured brothers at the rear of the truck, including Masood, preferred to die fighting than to fall into the hands of the cowards. Despite already being seriously injured, they opened fire and mowed down numerous OMON troops before being killed themselves by a hail of frenzied Russian fire.

And so, it was decreed by Allah that the final business transaction performed by our business studies post graduate was to be his most profitable (Inshallah!)-Trading his sole with Allah, as Allah informs us:

"Verily, Allah has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the price that theirs shall be paradise. They fight in Allah's cause, so they kill and are killed. It is a contract (promise) in truth which is binding on him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Quran. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That is the supreme success." [Quran 9:111]
