Bush Shares Sunrise with Pelican on Pacific Beach

LOS CABOS, Mexico (Reuters) - President Bush shared the limelight with a pelican Sunday as he took a sunrise jog along the pristine white sand of a deserted beach in the Baja, California, resort of Los Cabos.

In a change of pace from diplomatic maneuvering at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, Bush left his hotel before dawn for the nearby El Dorado golf course where he ran his daily three miles.

But the lure of the sun rising over the shimmering Sea of Cortez proved too much. Bush, an avid athlete, headed for the beach. He added several hundred yards to his regular workout while a lone pelican stood guard at the edge of a seaside green.

As the president, in white T-shirt and black shorts, and his accompanying gaggle of Secret Service runners paused to watch, the huge bird lumbered toward them before gracefully taking flight.

A weekend of diplomacy at Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit netted Bush a strong joint statement from Japan and South Korea calling on North Korea quickly dismantle its nuclear weapons program.

North Korea triggered a crisis by admitting earlier this month that it had violated a 1994 agreement with the United States, Japan and South Korea to control its nuclear program. U.S. officials believe the program has spawned one or two nuclear bombs.

Sunday, the leaders from 21 Pacific Rim countries wind up their annual meeting with a private retreat followed by a reading of the summit declaration.

They were expected to issue a statement on counter-terrorism focusing on denying would-be attackers access to ships and planes. They also will commit to shielding the region from economic turmoil.

A somewhat smarmy piece from Reuters. I feel certain the writer did not know that in medieval times and in early Christian art the pelican was a symbol of Christ.

I'm struck by the contrast of these photos of President Bush on the beach and those phoney photo ops of Bubba and Blubber dancing on the beach or that pathetic staged scene at Normandy.

What do you mean a smarmy piece by Reuters? I'm no fan of Reuters, however, I didn't see anything here that is objectionable here.

On another note, I feel even more lazy realizing that a 50+ year old man got up before daylight to run this morning. Even funnier is that the SS agents look a little winded!

Thanks for the great pictures of W and Laura!
Wish I felt like jogging so early in the morning!
I am younger than he is, and he wipes me out just looking at the picture! :-)

Perhaps a better choice of words might have been perfunctory, flat rather than smarmy.

Yes, the President is 56 and he definately keeps his SS detail on their toes. :)

And I'm struck by the fact that so many Freepers continue to constantly define President Bush in terms of a comparison with Caligula Clinton. President Bush has rightfully earned his OWN PLACE in history. Caligula Clinton and the rest of his hoard left TWO YEARS ago. Get with it already and stop unwittingly tainting President Bush.

Although staged, the photo is useful in that it shows two genuine fat, phoney, commies. Plus it reminds everyone what cottage cheese in saran wrap looks like.

Ya know, I think perhaps someone may have done that very thing. This week a book titled, George and Laura: An American Portrait (at least I think that is the correct title) is scheduled for release. I'm not sure if it is a standard coffee table size but I understand it has a lot of photos and information about their lives before and since they met and married. About how well they compliment each other, finding their soulmate late in life, the calming influence Laura has had on him, how she has helped him become centered and more focused.
