Bush talks trade with officials in Israel

The governor signs an agreement officials hope will double the annual $500-million in business between Florida and Israeli companies. In 1983 military officer Ehud Barak gave an obligatory briefing to U.S. Vice President George Bush's son Jeb, who was making his first trip to Israel. On Sunday, Barak, now prime minister of Israel, met again with Jeb Bush, now the governor of Florida, to talk about increasing the business ties between Florida and a nation halfway around the world. "He also met my wife back then and remembered her as being tan," Bush told reporters after the meeting. "Which I thought was cool since she is from Mexico and tan like a lot of the people here." At midday Sunday, the trade mission led to Bush and Israeli Minister of Industry and Commerce Ran Cohen signing an agreement dedicated to expanding their business ties.
Cohen predicted that the agreement, referred to as an economic cooperation memo of understanding, will at least double the estimated $500- million annual business that Florida is doing with Israeli companies. Bush said this week's mission is a prelude to a larger trade mission that he hopes to bring back to Israel in a year or so. "We believe Israel is a place of enormous vitality, and that's why we came today," Bush said. Bush started the day by laying a wreath at the grave of slain Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and visiting Yad Vashem, the memorial to the Holocaust.
At the museum's eternal flame, Bush laid a wreath in memory of the 6-million Jews who perished at the hands of Nazis, and walked slowly through the haunting children's exhibit, which features mirrored candles burning in the dark while the names and ages of each child who died are read aloud in English and Hebrew. Later he met with Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert and discussed the friendships between the United States and Israel and the potential expansion of business ties. When Bush met with Barak, the prime minister asked him how he thinks the U.S. presidential race is going. "I gave him my objective, unbiased opinion on the election," Bush said jokingly. "I said I think my brother is going to win, and he laughed." Bush said he did not spend much time talking about his brother, George W. Bush, because the purpose of the five- day trade mission was to increase trade between Florida and Israel. By evening, Bush was in Tel Aviv, an hour's drive north of Jerusalem, where Holland & Knight, Florida's biggest law firm, played host at a dinner for the two dozen or so Florida businessmen traveling with Bush and a number of Israeli business executives interested in establishing Florida ties.
This year Holland & Knight established a partnership in Israel with the Tel Aviv firm of Haim Samet, Steinmetz, Haring & Co., one of the nation's best-known law firms. Bill McBride, a Tampa resident who is managing partner of all Holland & Knight offices, praised Bush as "a person who cares for people" and said the governor has used his first year in office to "boldly tackle problems in Florida as he sees them." McBride described traveling with Bush as similar to being in the company of a rock star. "In Jerusalem, one person leaned over to another and said, "That's Bush," McBride recalled. "Which one?" the other man asked. The cute one from Florida, was the reply. "Bush's style is friendly, and he is high-tech; but there is gravity and substance to this governor. He knows how to do the right thing. "This is a special trip for all of us," McBride said as he praised Bush's wife, Columba, and their son, George Prescott, who has been working as an intern in Holland & Knight offices in Mexico and Argentina.
The Bushes' son is about to go to California to help with his uncle George W. Bush's run for the presidency. McBride predicted that George P. may follow in the political footsteps of other Bushes after establishing a base in California. "The Bush family strategy is pretty obvious: a former president, two sons as governor, one as president and moving the Clintons to New York," McBride said jokingly. Today, Bush and the other Florida businessmen will meet with U.S. Ambassador Edward S. Walker Jr. and conduct a seminar on Florida business opportunities for interested Israeli companies.
