It actually wasn't that close. Ashcroft lost by about 50,000 votes and 2 or 3 percentage points.

Not to mention the fact that the Rabid attack hounds of the DNC intensified rather than easing their character assination ads against Ashcroft. Hopefully the candidate in Minnesota as well as the RNC, will remember the lessons of history.
