I've been rooting for them since Yeltsin stood atop a tank at the Russian White House.
It's a funny thing about Russia...for a short while, back in the 1940's we were allies. There was even a saying, as I recall, that Russians were like Americans without the creases in their pants. That changed for awhile during the cold war.
But truth be told, I suspect that the US and Russia will become good friends. Perhaps American innovation combined with a drop of Russian ruthlessness is what's needed to win the war on terrorism.
No, one of my most vivid childhood memories is duck and cover drills in elementary school which would supposedly save us when Russia hit us with the big one.
Brother, you said it. If someone would have told me 25 years ago that we would be sitting here cheering on the Russian special forces, I'd have wondered what kind of mushrooms he'd been chewing, or something.
As it stands, old-style USSR communism was the height of civilization compared to Islamo-nazism. Instead of French-kissing with the Saudis, we need to develop common cause with the Russians. It's a whole new scenario out there.
Never in my wildest dreams! We certainly have unlikely allies in the war against Islam.
Never! Not in my lifetime! They were the enemy throughout my childhood and up until the wall fell! Hooyah!
Yes, but I'm just past 30 and only started feeling kindly towards them about eight years ago.
Never, never, never, never. I remember in 6th grade, a teacher went to Russia and had "show and tell" with slides he took (long long lines to get only one item, i.e., milk, then another long long line to get another item, i.e., bread, etc.)......there was nothing but distrust for them....
Then, when Gorbechov (sp?) "tore down the wall," I had nothing but distrust.....I felt it was insincere and a method or strategy to do something to us.....of late, and only of late, have I started to have any trust for that government....very curious turnaround (there is still, however, in the back of my mind, distrust, but not nearly as strong).
I'm 62 and I did think that day would come
though I wasn't certain it would be in my lifetime.
The "Russians" were not our enemy. The "Communists" were and still are.
