Here's an open question about the Pasadena Freep.

We oppose teacher's unions not because of their efforts to increase teacher pay, but because of their protection of a highly bureaucratized system that has undermined education in our country. As a result, if we visit events for the teachers' union, surely anti-union signs are justified.

But I have not heard any such complaints about firefighters, and surely if there's any group of government workers who deserve high pay, it's the folks who constantly risk their lives by diving into burning buildings. So I'm not even against the Firefighters' union per se, and I doubt that most of you are, either.

So I propose we confuse the heck out of them, with signs like:

FIREFIGHTERS - YES
GRAY DAVIS - NO!

Anyone else have creative ideas? I don't think we do anyone favours by opposing firefighters, but we must be there to DUMP DAVIS!

After all, at the rate Davis is bankrupting the state, pretty soon there won't be money left for firefighters!

(I've probably forgotten a bunch of people to ping; feel free to ping others).

True.. Firefighters are great hard-working public servants that deserve our praise and support. This is a Dump Davi$ event, not dump the firefighters.

FIRE Davis seems like an appropriate sign, too!

I've been thinking the same thing. We need to make it abundantly clear we support our firefighters.

That having been said, why the hell are they having a political candidate at their gathering? They are public employees and they should stay away from that kind of thing.

They should ... but they are public employees, and I suspect it's very tough to stay out of politics if political decisions directly affect your livelihood. Why do you think it is that unions, especially public employee unions, are such a political force?

There's no question that the Democrats are more sympathetic to public employees, and as a general rule I certainly don't want to change that. So we're kinda stuck here on the other side.

Okay, I have an idea! Have you seen the latest Simon commercial? It says something like 'the power crisis is costing as much as 100,000 new police'. Even though it's not realistic to borrow money for new police in the same way we're borrowing to buy power, I think it would be a great line. Can you make up some signs like this:

During the Power Crisis
Davis squandered the yearly wages of
100,000 firefighters!
Where were you?
DUMP DAVIS!

(Use the same orange red as the Dump Davis signs, or - better yet - use a black background with flames and put white lettering up. That will confuse the heck out of the firefighters!)

"eGray in Pasadena" FReep UPDATE!

We are STILL planning to FReep eGray on SATURDAY (10/26),
but perhaps we should re-focus our protest to reflect some NEW information:

1 - This is a FAMILY event (with CHILDREN), so the "Hooker" may not be a good idea,

2 - We need to stress that the FIREFIGHTERS are not our enemy; GRAY DAVIS is, and

3 - We may have greater effectiveness with a "FIRE Gray Davis"-related theme...
