Mr. Moose just held another news conference. Said the Police Department couldn't communicate electronically with the sniper in the manner he requested. What a mess.
The police said call back to get an 800 number or a PO Box.

"How about hiding it in a pumpkin at the old Hiss farm on the Eastern Shore."
That would be Whittaker Chambers' farm, actually, not Hiss'.

I am seeing a lot of speculation about what is going on and a lot of criticism of those in charge, but I really haven't seen a lot of serious suggestions about how to go about catching this guy or these guys, no mattter who they are. I have heard remarks made in jest and a lot of comments about arming the people, but tell me how having anybody armed in any of these situations would have made any difference.
We have a lot of really smart people on FR. I would be very interested in seeing what FReepers would do, if they were in charge, to end this.

But what makes C.O.P. Moose believe the sniper would be gullible enough to fall for his "call me back I think Moose and task force is purposely insulting this guy so they have a chance at catching him on his next shoot and hope no one gets killed. I think they have little if any real evidence and can only catch him if he continues to hunt. OR they are one more shooting from catching him.

Unless the sniper is extremely sophisticated in the complicated business of international bank transfers, he's unlikely to come up with a method to get funds without getting caught.
While I think we're dealing with a very anal-retentive person who is meticulous in most respects, he certainly lost it on October 2, when he first went on the killing spree.
There were no ransom notes there. That was a run and shoot event.
The sniper is no fool. But he is crazy. He's going to screw up, and the longer we can string him out in making this ransom demand, the more clues he's leaving. This is a very positive development in the case.

Good Post, Jerry Nachman MSNBC raised the race question in asking today if thats the reason Moose is still in charge of this multi-crime scene investigation. The experts he asked the question stated they hoped not, but emphatically said we want the FBI.I'm sure Moose is fine in the normal course of his duties, this is bit more.He doesn't exude much confidence, nearly everyone else who's spoken has been a 100% better as a communicator, right now at least looking and sounding confident can be somewhat re-assuring.

What would I do if I were in charge? I'd take every tenth person in those counties and execute them... it might take a while, but I'd eventually reach someone that the sniper cared about...
Well, ok... I wouldn't...

I hope it's ME terrorism (vs. domestic). I think that would finally galvanize the sheeple and the govt to get serious about offing these bastards, and not worrying too much about profiling, offending the religion of peace or giving a crap about what the French, the ACLU and about 6 million university-diversity whack jobs think.
To: DC native
I think it probably has been for some time, since the Secret Service and FBI were involved almost immediately. I also think they are leaking tidbits of information to the media only when it advances their agenda. For instance, the reference to this being about more than violence may be a way to let the world know who is behind the killings and to shape world opinion at a very critical time. Of course, if this is just a loose kook, none of this applies.
Exactly.......first they leaked the 10 million ransom,
then our kids being in danger.....then they confirmed it.
So are they just getting us ready for the really "bad
news" about what this shooter really wants.

"Does anyone know why they have not released the victims name from the Ponderosa?" They said it is because the wife requested that the name not be released, but if I am not mistaken, they have not released the names of any of the survivors. Perhaps there is some fear that the guy might feel compelled to finish the job, although that doesn't seem likely.

Your theory on the wire transfer is about as interesting as any other.Well thanks...
But what makes C.O.P. Moose believe the sniper would be gullible enough to fall for his "call me back at this(tapped) phone number? or, How 'bout if we set you up with a P.O. box?? A 5 year old kid wouldn't fall for that.
I don't think Moose (or more accurately, Moose's puppeteers) does think that, but they probably believe it's worth trying.
A fly in my theoretical ointment is that the sniper has used the phone at least once. I'd think he'd have gone with shortwave at the beginning if he were that advanced. Then again, maybe the phone call that "Moose" "wanted to get right" was a frequency number, and when they asked him to call back, he responded with another victim and a detailed note. Dunno.

Exactly. Unfortunately, FR is not a self-righteousness free zone. Always somebody ready to flash his PC credentials and check the facts later.

I'm too much of a heathen savage to ever have pc creds ;0)

I would be very interested in seeing what FReepers would do, if they were in charge, to end this.Hm, probably train a bunch of NSA satellites on the tri-state area and record every minute in detail, like in "Enemy of the State."
I'm just full of movie references tonight, eh?

We have a lot of really smart people on FR. I would be very interested in seeing what FReepers would do, if they were in charge, to end this. 1. Publish the Ponderos note in all local papers and on television. Use the actual note so the handwriting is available. Someone just may be able to identify a suspect from this information alone.
2. Don't just shut down the roads after the next shooting, get the citizenry involved. Announce that the next shooting will result in the tornado warning horn being set off within five miles of the shooting. Ask the public if they hear the horn to stop their vehicles in place and block all ingress and egress. Ask home owners and business people who hear the horn to check their neighborhoods for anything unusual.

Am I wrong to be suspicious of this guy?>>>>>>
I'm sure Moose is only doing/saying what he's TOLD to do...

Take it to the bank-they are. The killer has formed a relationship with Moose. No matter how you feel about Moose-he's got a huge weight on his shoulders now.>>>>>>>>>
Glad to see someone else realizes Moose has been put in a
tough spot......

Perhaps the "electronics" involves money transfer, perhaps not. Could be the sniper wants temporary or periodic broadcast control over all the media to deliver some message. This might explain the 800 number: a number that all could call to hear his rants. The PO box could be used for those who wished to order hard copies.
Alternatly, maybe he is trying to set up a fund raising mechanism by which folks can send in money to keep him from killing their kids.
To: CharacterCounts
You are on the right track here. One thing that Moose is failing at is getting the 3 million residents involved. Why not release eyewitness sketches? Even if the sketches are general in nature, it gets people watching others more closely. It seems that LE is failing to utilize one of the best tools they have.
