MEAN JEAN CARNAHAN
BSNN.NET ^ | 10-21-02 | NATHAN PORTER

Posted on 10/21/2002 7:14:51 PM PDT by KLT

If Missouri Senator Jean Carnahan were Barbara Bush some leftist celebrity would’ve called her a bitch by now. Most folks in Missouri think Jean Carnahan is a nice lady for whom they should feel sympathy. But last week a truer portrait of Senator Carnahan emerged and many are beginning to see that in truth she’s petty and mean.

Much has been made of her recent appraisal of President Bush’s ineffectiveness as Commander in Chief.

“I'm the No. 1 target of the White House,” Mean Jean said with a twinge of malice. “They can't get Osama bin Laden. They're going to get me.”

She’s half right, which for Mean Jean is better than average.

“Despicable,” Missouri Republican Party chairwoman Ann Wagner said of the slander. “Unusually odd and inappropriate,” said RNC chairman Mark Racicot. And handling the situation with Republican-issue kid gloves, Jim Talent was unnecessarily kind when he said, “I'm sure Mrs. Carnahan didn't mean to say what she said.”

Not only did she mean what she said, it probably wasn’t the first time she said it and it was probably sanctioned by the DNC. She didn’t say anything Al Gore hasn’t already said.

Lost in all the Hubabaloo over the Osama crack was a subtler but no less vicious zinger from Mean Jean’s repertoire. When asked why Missouri seemed to be so politically divided Mean Jean had a ready answer: “Yes, we were even that way during the Civil War. So I think it's a tradition we've carried on.”

It doesn’t leap off the page like the Osama remark, but one must remember that Missouri was once targeted with Democrat ads suggesting a vote for Republicans was a vote for burning down African-American churches. This remark is just Jean’s “Granny Clampett” way of saying a vote for Talent is a vote for having your uncle Jesse hitched to a pick-up full of rednecks who are too stupid to vote, but if they could vote, surely it would be for Republicans.

Jim Talent is making a concerted effort to attract African-American votes in Missouri ’s cities. "Who's come up with the big ideas for the urban core in the last 10 years, which party?" he asks. And if the latest polls are correct, Talent seems to be scoring points and moving ahead, which makes Mean Jean’s need for the black vote more urgent. The result is a subtle but calculated answer with a pinch of racial overtone.

We should’ve seen this mean-spiritedness coming. Soon after widowing her way into the US Senate, Carnahan gave a tepid (half-assed) introduction of John Ashcroft during his confirmation hearing, despite the fact that it is Senate custom — born out of common courtesy — for the Senators of a nominee’s home state to make glowing introductory statements. But this simple task required more grace than Carnahan was able to muster, so she displayed her contempt for the man whose common courtesy put her in the seat she now occupies.

The illegitimate way in which Carnahan “succeeded” to the Senate makes her behavior all the more nauseating. And what’s with this notion that if a candidate dies his spouse gets appointed to the seat? Under this logic Torricelli’s girlfriend should’ve run in his place, not Loutenberg?

If George H.W. 41 Bush had died while serving as CIA director, should President Ford have asked Bar to finish out the term? Why not make First Ladies first in the line of presidential succession as well? That way when Reagan was shot we could’ve had Nancy Reagan standing in the press room of the White House proclaiming, “I’m in charge here!” Imagine the course of history had a deranged Mary Todd Lincoln assumed the presidency in 1865. Would Eleanor have dropped the bomb? And do you really think Jackie’s administration would’ve gone for the moon landing?

Meanwhile, Mean Jean goes around Missouri touting herself as a gun-totin’ granny, bragging about having had guns in her home. “And our family has had guns in our home,” she boasts.

I half expected the next words out of her mouth to be, “I’m not anti-gun. Some of my best friends are guns.” But they weren’t. Her next words were, “And our son is going out this weekend to see if he can get a turkey for Thanksgiving,” which in Carnahan-speak means he’s extending an invitation to Al Gore.

Time to sock it to these gungrabbing Dems on the facts.

Yesterday, an article ran in the Clarksburg, WV paper, in which Jay Rockefeller claimed to be pro-Second Amendment too. Maybe that's why he has an 'F' from the NRA. /sarcasm

He also claimed to be against late-term abortions, even though he has voted against the ban on partial-birth abortions repeatedly.

Maybe the funniest lie (in an ironic sort of way) in the piece was when he claimed he was against tax increases.

I sure hope every conservative in MO is working as hard to expose Carnahan's lies as the conservatives in WV are working to shine light on Rockefeller's.

She never became, nor earned the title of, Senator Carnahan. She remains "the dead guy's wife."

I wish! I live in Alabama, with a bank account that is slightly more than a vapor and college classes to attend. Feel free to use the Carnahan image to make the libs mad, if you go to D.C.

He's forgetting a number of notable widows and wives - including Edith Wilson, Sonny Bono's widow, and billy's estranged wife, hillary.

This person in Missouri does not think she is a nice lady nor does she deserve my sympathy. Otherwise excellent article! Thanks!

Does anyone know what ever happened to the lawsuit she brought against the airplane company?

Her lack of grace was revealed when she voted NO on Ashcroft becoming AG.

"And our family has had guns in our home,” she boasts. "

And she probably has, along with armed guards.

The democrats are not against guns, they just don't want you to be able to own them.

While I agree with Sen. Carnahan on the Civil War comment, ( I have made the same observation myself, concerning political division of the state.) I disagree with her on almost everything she stands for.

I recieved a "polling call" from the UAW (United Auto Workers) today.
A very nice lady asked if I was going to support Jean Carnahan in november.

I advised her I would rather cut my own throat and let my children starve to death.
Our conversation ended somewhat abruptly after that.
It was not my intention to end the conversation, because I still had much more to say concerning Union support for democratic candidates, and democrats in general.

But the lady was not interested in hearing any more.

Oh, well. Maybe next time.

If I remember right, the airplane company settled out.

I have always though of Widder Carnahan as Hillary!s 'second vote'.

...mental image of Hillary!s hand up Jean's a$$ and working her jaw and throwing her voice at the same time.....
