Barbra Streisand may have a voice like buttah, but she has an ego as fragile as a china doll. In the latest item on her Website (www.barbrastreisand.com), the songstress takes issue with an ad being run by Republican Marilyn O'Grady, who is challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of New York.
According to the "truth alert" posted on Streisand's site, O'Grady has "made a last-ditch effort to win headlines by devising ads in which she blatantly misquoted Barbra Streisand, fabricating outrageous quotes and completely misrepresenting Ms. Streisand's deep opposition to the Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein."
The Republican's ad says, "Barbra Streisand defends Saddam Hussein and then rips [President] George [W.] Bush as a frightening dictator." Although Streisand's denial that she "defends Saddam Hussein" may be accurate, the claims that her characterization of Bush was distorted do not warrant the same clarification.
"In Ms. Streisand's remarks at the recent Democratic National Gala, she spoke of having seen President Bush on television saying jokingly and these are the president's words, not Ms. Streisand's 'If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck-of-a-lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator,'" reads the "truth alert."
Yes, the remarks were made by Bush and Streisand, in fact, did say so. However, in her pep rally to Democrats she immediately added, "You know people never really joke. That was very revealing a taste of things to come the arrogance of wanting unlimited executive power a government that operates in secret keeping presidential papers secret holding secret meetings with oil companies."
It appears 'Broadway Babs' only likes to alert her readers to the truth as she sees it.
It was several hours before he site corrected the nationality. What a putz.

This article, written by somebody who is not Barbra Streisand, assuming so, should not disinclude a disclaimer, noting its disjointed nature, my phrase not hers, is so muddled and not greatly written, as to be near indistinguishable in tone and clarity to those writings attributed to though not necessarily not written by Barbra Streisand herself.
Saddam would have to choose between suffocating in his own vomit or killing himself to escape the torture of seeing them naked.
Trio is more deadly than 3 cruise missiles and cheaper too.
/sarcasm off
She would appear to be a glutton for punishment.
So, bye bye Babs, Celine has outdone you by a mile and a half in the voice department. Celine is the Queen, Babs is a has been. So, Babs, retire already! Babs is the DIVA that is taking a DIVEAAA!
Just worth repeating.
Has it been reliably documented that Bush made these remarks, even in jest? When and where were they made?
I got a chuckle out of how you spelled it.
I saw video of GWB saying this. It was in jest, and he was laughing even as he said it. Having seen the video, I do not attribute it to unconstrained megalomania.
Now if Hillary! had said it, that would be a different matter. And she wouldn't have been laughing.
Thanks for your reply. I would never suggest that W. has even a hint of "unconstrained megalomania," but I do get a little exasperated at his frat boy humor at times.
The sainted Reagan made a similar mistake, so I am not just slamming W. Reagan once said during a radio broadcast, when he thought the mike was dead, "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes." The remark follows him to this day.
If you are President of the United States, a jest can take on a dark life of its own. Better not to joke at all in public on matters of governance.
