From Scott Tate's Campaign Manager
Hello, Free Republic members:
I have read with interest your comments on Scott Tate's endorsement by the Washington Post, both the highly complimentary ones and the critical ones. I understand the nature of your bulleting board, and was entertained by the comments on both sides.
First, let me tell you there are damn few people in the 8th District who are more conservative than me. So, why am I working for Scott Tate? Well, about a million reasons, but let me focus on two.
First, control of the House. How many of you would give up a chance to block Dick Gephardt from becoming Speaker of the House? How about Chairman Charlie Rangel? Chairman Henry Waxman? Etc.? The fact is, the vote for Speaker is THE single most important vote any member of Congress will cast in any given term of office. Period. Controlling the flow of legislation is critical. Would you rather be in a frustrating fight FOR the Republican agenda, or a losing fight against the Democratic agenda?
Scott Tate wants to make permanent the Bush Tax cuts. Jim Moran wants to raise your taxes on general principle.
Scott wants to ban partial birth abortion. Jim Moran believes abortion is simply another form of birth control.
Scott does not support gun owner registration. Jim Moran has made registration of gun ownership a priority.
The second reason is Jim Moran. Jim Moran is a man who seems to have sold his integrity to big moneyed interests. Scott Tate is an honest and ethical choice.
Scott doesn't beat his wife. Scott doesn't beat up little kids. Scott hasn't had to resign from the city council as a result of a criminal conviction on conflict of interest charges.
We have run pure conservatives in Virginia's 8th district before. Kyle McSlarrow (a truly great man whom I supported), John Otey (a genuine conservative) and Demaris Miller (I worked really hard for Demaris) and we come up short. A pure conservative is unlikely to win in the 8th anytime soon.
Consider the District. Consider the candidates. Consider the importance of Dennis Hastert for Speaker vs. Dick Gephardt. Then go vote on November 5th for Scott Tate.

Honest letter at least.
Why are certain Freepers complaining?

Why are certain Freepers complaining? They've forgotten that "the best is the enemy of the good".

We were complaining because he's a RINO. But the letter is true. I guess I'll vote for him.

And those who allow the perfect to be the enemy of good enough only get the bad.

If the devil himself was running against a Democrat, I'd vote for the devil in good conscience. At least you know what you're getting.
To: chambley1
Are the polls suggesting that Scott has a chance on November 5th? I've not seen one in a very long time, but I hope Scott wins.

Bump.
I take back my earlier "RINO" accusation. Being a moderate does not mean he is a RINO. I guess I overreacted when I saw the Washington Compost's glowing endorsement of Tate.

You can tell he is a Democrap, with his plea to vote for the democrap, no matter how bad he is, just so they can control congress. It is this reason they will not win.

I think we have to differentiate between various kinds of RINOs.
Some RINOs are the only kind of Republicans who can possibly be elected to office in certain liberal districts or states. Nancy Johnson of Connecticut is a good example. She can usually be counted on to follow the leadership when her vote is critical. When it is not critical, she gets their permission to vote the other way so as to remain in office. In the crunch, Johnson DID vote to impeach clinton, even though it was very dangerous to her political health.
Some RINOs are true mavericks. They do what they like and never try to square it with the leadership. A prime example is McCain, who goes out of his way to make trouble and basically does whatever feeds his large ego. Most of his actions seem predicated not on the necessities of getting re-elected but on the desire to make as much trouble as possible for his own party. Another example is Amo Houghton, who voted against impeachment and more recently against the Iraq measure. Or Peter King, who went out of his way to undermine the Republicans in the weeks before impeachment, appearing on talk shows and lying about how his colleagues planned to vote. Or Chris Shays.
Then regretably there are RINOs who are put into office by a failure of nerve on the part of the national leadership. In some districts a conservative actually would do better than a RINO, but for some inscrutable reason the RNC imposes a RINO on the local party anyway. This is sheer foolishness, and is a legitimate reason to give your money to candidates whom you support and not to the RNC.
I don't know Scott Tate, but if this post is accurate, it sounds as if he is the person to vote for. The best can be the enemy of the good in certain cases. Politics is the art of the possible. You want as good as you can get, but you need to have common sense and prudence, too.

I'm new to the 8th District and am much more conservative than Scott Tate. The district is moderate to liberal, unfortunately. I'm surprised the WP endorsed a Republican. It's not the first time. I think they endorsed Tom Davis over Leslie Byrne. Trying to keep the House in GOP control makes it an easy decision for me. I put a Tate bumper sticker on two months ago.

The truth is, vin-one, there is no one in the House race you and I would consider a conservative. Scott Tate, if elected, will vote with us some of the time when he can as opposed to Jim Moran who never votes with us. Moran is a scumbag to boot. A moderate Republican is about the best this district is going to elect. Even with all that's out there about Moran, I still expect Moran to win. And yes, I plan to write in Oliver North's name for Senate. I hope North gets at least 417 votes, or however many Virginians there are on the FR Virginia page. Thanks for the compliment, btw. :^)

I guess I overreacted when I saw the Washington Compost's glowing endorsement of TateLikewise, I'll take back my "scumbag" comment and hope that when push comes to shove, Scott takes the side of honor and decency over the ham-handed extortion efforts of the Greenwood / Castle / Shays liberal (scumbag) "Republican" coalition. I'll give Scott the benefit of the doubt and hope he wins. I know he has to be miles above that animal Moran.
I am just really bothered that Scott was endorsed by the Washington Post, which is nothing more than a shameless mouthpiece for the DNC.
To: chambley1
I vote for the most conservative, socially and fiscally, candidate available that doesn't have a (DEM) next to his name. I would have no problem voting for your guy if I lived in your district. In fact, my guy, Congressman Simmons, probably mirrors your guy and although we have had some, shall we say, heated corresondence regarding certain matters, he is infinitely preferable to the socilaist shmuck he dethroned, Sam Gejdenson.
Good luck, throwing Sam out on his ass was a distinct pleasure, especially after the tete a tete my wife and I had with about 100 union goons at one of the debates. Sometimes, life is indeed sweet.

re: your post #12
Nice analysis.
One thing - - have you ever heard the scumbag liberal newsrooms use the rather complimentary word "maverick" when talking about a Democrat who has a tendency to vote against his party's socialist / America-destroying agenda? Ever heard Zell Miller called a "maverick", the way McCain is?
To: vin-one; Mudboy Slim
"...are we still writing in Ollie North..????"Yes, a lot of Virginia FReepers plan to write in "Ollie North" for Senate for the purpose of sending a message to John Warner for his traitorous acts in 1993 and 1994. Be on the lookout for a thread that Mudboy Slim is working on that will detail our efforts.
