Superintendent Trevor Parks said the man, of Asian background, had been taken into police custody and was being questioned
Sheesh, why can't they be specific. Is he Japanese? Is he Indonesian? Israeli? Diego Garcian? Saudi? Vietnamese?
Asia is a large place.

Why is is specific background important? He shot some people and apparently was an honors student at the school.

This bothers me too. The British and Australians do this all the time. They know it waters down the news. I always used to wonder why the British white youths were fighting with Asians who I assumed were Indians. Now I know it was the Pakistanis.

Interesting, the CNN article seems to have been taken directly from this report, but they seem to have gotten a couple things turned around. . .perhaps in their haste or maybe the facts have changed; but the following is from the Monash University Website:
"Incident at Monash University"
At approximately 11.20am today a shooting took place at the Menzies Building on the Clayton campus of Monash University. . .
Two men of Asian appearance have been killed and five people are injured and are in hospital receiving treatment. The extent of their injuries is not known.
. . .maybe not 'related' to terrorism; just a gut response to it. . .

Well "Australia is a multi-cultural society now" and it's not proper to highlight such things as diversity killings.
But it appears at least one of the victims was Vietnamese and the gunman was Chinese. (I would have expected those nationalities or possibly Cambodian).
