By Mark Silva | Sentinel Political Editor
Posted October 19, 2002

...Although various polls have suggested that the governor's race is close, a new survey showing Bush with a 9-point lead over McBride gave cheer to the Republicans on Friday.

The poll by McLaughlin & Associates of Alexandria, Va., done for U.S. Sugar Corp., shows Bush with 49.2 percent to McBride's 40.5 percent, with the remainder undecided. The margin of error was 4 percent. Six hundred people were surveyed by phone Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Jim McLaughlin, the pollster, said Bush was running solidly ahead in all parts of the state except South Florida. The results contrast with a Zogby International poll from last week, showing a three-point lead for the governor....

It does seem to me that McBride has been getting a free ride in the national press. Some have even mentioned him as a future Presidential prospect. His positions (or lack thereof) on the issues doesn't ever seem to come up. Is this true in the Florida media as well?

Maybe it's because of my own experiences and the people I listen to, which includes voters who are not GOP -- I have no doubtr Gov Bush will win it

Good news. Thanks for sharing.

How come when Jeb's daughter's problems are smeared all over the air, Jeb is not thought of as "just one of us."

Could it be the FL media?

The most honest local media piece I read about McMumble was THIS ONE -- written by UF students who saw Debate #1.

Ironically, these college kids attend McMumble's alma mater -- yet these students slammed him in the above editorial. Whatever their political leanings, these universtiy students saw the same debate I saw, and many FL voters saw.

My pleasure. BTW, I am one of the few who correctly predicted Bloomberg would defeat Greene in the NYC mayor's race. :)

Thanks for posting the link. The editorial definitely describes the debate I saw, too. McBride was so bad that I actually started laughing. I thought no one could possibly take him seriously after that because it wasn't just that he presented himself poorly, but that he had nothing to offer.

Does it matter? Not like anyone watches Hardball, anyway. Hell, even Donahue beat it in the ratings just the other day (Not to say his ratings were great. Donahues' still in the cellar, ratingswise, but amazingly enough Mathews did worse).

Yeah, Chris Matthews needs to actually spend some time in FL and do something radical, like talk to actual FL voters, especially independents.

I think not everyone watched debate #1 - but more people will be watching the final debate, #3, on Tuesday.

Bloomberg was the last person I wanted to see be Mayor....and now I'm hearing (from Sean Hannity, for one), that the City is going back to what it was like before Guilliani took over as mayor, and this was not meant as a compliment.

Excellent article summer, on the link. I especially like the part about how challengers need to give specific reasons why the incumbent doesn't deserve to retain the office, and offer their solutions to the problems created by the elected official. Too often in all elections, the left just relies on name calling and the usual race baiting class warfare tactics instead of saying what they will do if elected!

Here in Lee County Florida Jeb is way ahead of McBride--but we are a Republican stronghold. Also our people know how to use the voting machines and how to vote. This year I will be a poll watcher for the Republicans. Curious about this as I have no idea what to watch. We have a meeting on Wednesday night to teach us our new job. GO JEB.

Re your post #26 - Yes, I think so. Gov Bush has been actively involved in the drug issue throughout his term in office, as has his wife, and many average people contact him on that matter and connect with him there. They see him as just one more parent saddened and pained by such problem, even though the media does not.

Jeb will clean up in debate #3! I read that his mother will be there, too, to cheer him on. As for Chris Matthews, he's lost all credibility with me. I'm really glad to hear that his ratings have slid.

But Greene was making terrible decisions especially in the latter part of his campaign. I knew he would lose.

Also our people [Republicans, of course] know how to use the voting machines and how to vote.

LOL; have fun watching....I did read the DOJ was sending down people to watch, as well.
