Kuwait: Youth says attack was ordered

Teen was arrested with explosives in Kuwait

KUWAIT - A teenager who was arrested with explosives in front of a complex housing Americans in Kuwait said he was threatened with death if he didn't carry out an attack, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

The unidentified 17-year-old was detained Thursday after parking a car near the Alia and Ghalia towers in Fintas, 15 miles south of Kuwait City, where some U.S. military personnel live.

The incident was the third involving an apparent threat against U.S. troops in Kuwait this month.

The youth called police to report the suspicious vehicle, which contained 10 bottles filled with gasoline and stuffed with cloth fuses. He told the police he had received orders from Pakistan over the Internet to carry out an attack.

"He told investigators that they said they will kill him and his family if he doesn't follow orders," an Interior Ministry official said. It was not clear who had contacted the boy. The official said many questions remained unanswered: "Did he really receive orders? Did he back off because he had regrets? ... Is he one of the Failaka group?"

On Oct. 8, two Kuwaitis opened fire on U.S. Marines participating in war games on Failaka island off the Kuwaiti coast, killing one and wounding another.

On Monday, U.S. soldiers came under fire in northern Kuwait, but there were no casualties.

Late Thursday, the Interior Ministry released a statement saying reports the youth was "carrying explosive material to use against that residential complex are totally baseless." The Interior Ministry official said Friday that the statement was intended to deny exaggerated media reports.

The youth didn't have TNT or bombs, the official said, adding that "all the bottles could do was start a small fire."
