LOS ANGELES - Jaime Rincon was minding his own business the other day when he ran into Bill Simon.
The meeting occurred at a Latino business expo where the Long Beach machine shop owner had gone to get some advice and the Republican gubernatorial candidate had gone to get some votes.

Pachon pointed to recent voter-registration figures in Riverside County, where there were more Latinos registering as Republicans than as Democrats.
"Partisan roots aren't that deep among first-generation voters," he said. "Latino voters tend to identify themselves first as working families, rather than Latino or Chicano or anything else. They vote on everyday-life issues like the economy or education, not ideology."

Maybe they will follow traditional Latino voting patterns and overwhelmingly support the incumbent, Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. Maybe they will vote for Simon or Green Party candidate - and Latino - Peter Camejo. Or maybe they won't vote at all.
"What I am hearing more than anything is that Latinos who are not energized by the candidates are going to stay away from the polls," said Assemblyman Bob Pacheco, R-Walnut. "They might not vote for Simon, but they won't vote for Davis, so Davis loses a big share of his (traditional) vote, and that might be enough to put Bill Simon over."
We need to keep this in mind. Even if we can't win over a majority of the Hispanics, if we can avoid being branded as the "devil", not as many of them will be energized to go out and vote.
All is not lost with regard to the Hispanics.

Simon will lose precisely because he has not embraced the message of Proposition 187. The native-born Americans in California---admittedly declining in number as the ethnic cleansing of the state proceeds---are still the vast majority of voters and would rally strongly around a candidate who would take a stand against La Reconquista.

Interesting you say that. I used to live in Riverside County. I know it is a more conservative area, but that's still very interesting.
And on the Davis-Simon thing, I certainly haven't ruled out a Simon upset. Davis is very unpopular.
